CONNECTICUT SUMMERS ARE HARD TO BEAT So Many Attractions, All About an Hour Away

T here’s nothing like a Connecticut summer. Every direction provides an opportunity to experience something new and exciting. If you head east, you have the shoreline of the Long Island Sound with great beaches. Head west and there are rolling hills and beautiful mountains. From the moment you start your car, you’re one hour from a bounty of unforgettable moments. We live in a small state, but we sure have huge attractions. Paul lives west of the Connecticut River, and Kelly lives east, but they both love the variety Hartford has to offer. The abundance of opportunities for children is incredible. Lake Compounce is a local staple for most of us, but it’s surprising how few people know it’s the oldest amusement park in the country. Boulder Dash has been voted the No. 1 wooden roller coaster, mainly because you feel like you’re being transported into the past as you cut through the luscious green trees of summer. If you and your kids aren’t thrill-seekers, you can head over to the Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport. The Amur tiger cubs are a must-see. Both Reka and Zeya are sure to melt your heart. Of course, there’s the Lego factory, where you can get a behind-the-scenes tour of one of the world’s most nostalgic toys. If you want to kick it up a notch, the Connecticut Science Center offers a mind-blowing experience that will leave your kids flabbergasted. While human-made attractions are engrossing, the natural beauty of Connecticut is really where our great state captivates the soul. From the summertime festivities of the great mountain resorts to the recreational lakes all maintained by the state, our New England gem provides outdoor adventures unlike any other. If you don’t believe us, you haven’t been to Litchfield County. The picturesque landscape will make you feel like you’ve been transported into a greeting card. “WHILE OUR STATE HAS AN INCREDIBLE SELECTION OF ACTIVITIES, IT’S THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE CONNECTICUT GREAT.”

Let’s not forget the nautical and historical Mystic shoreline area — Mystic Village, Mystic Seaport, and the Mystic Aquarium. While you’re out that way, how about stopping for a delicious shore dinner along the water? Also, don’t forget the U.S. Naval submarine base in Groton, the “Submarine Capital of the World!” Between the Submarine Force Library and Museum and the tours on the USS Nautilus, there’s wonderful intrigue and history for all ages. We also have two of the finest casino locations in eastern Connecticut with plenty of entertainment and shopping for all. With our beautiful city of Hartford smack-dab in the middle of New York and Boston, you’d think we’d have middle-child syndrome. But for those of you who are natives, you know that the unique attractions and accessibility make this place a hidden treasure. We can’t picture living anywhere else. While our state has an incredible selection of activities, it’s the people who make Connecticut great. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a harder-working or more genuine group of individuals. From blue-collar farm hands to Yale graduates who just couldn’t leave, it is the people in this community who create a place worth living in. Whether it’s at one of these spots or your secret hideaway, when you head out for your summertime adventures, try reflecting on what makes this place great to you. You’ll feel more than contentment; you’ll feel pride. –Paul Levin and Kelly Kasheta
