A BOOK A MONTH Books which Members of the Biola Faculty have found Helpful

The Dynam ic of Service B y P aget W il k e s . R eviewed by R ev . J o h n H . H unter Although this book; published by the Japan Evangelistic Band, is not new, the fourth edition having been issued in 1924, it is a book that we should like to put into the hands of every intending foreign mis sionary, and indeed into the hands of many now on the field. That it has proved worth-while is shown by its running into a fourth edition, and also by its hav ing been translated into French, Hindi, and Chinese dialects, and requests being made for Russian and Danish transla tions. The Japan Evangelistic Band, of which Mr. Paget Wilkes is a member, is an in dependent and wholly evangelistic mis sionary agency operating for many years in Japan, and has enjoyed much blessing upon its labors. Mr. Wilkes himself was called over to Shanghai two years ago to lead a series of special revival services in the inter national settlement, which produced won derful spiritual results not only among the foreign residents but among the Chi nese Christians. This, just when Chinese sentiment was, running so strongly against the British (Mr. Wilkes is an English man) and against' the Japanese (Mr. Wilkes being a missionary from Japan), evidenced the fact that the power of God was present. The book opens with a chapter entitled “The Dynamic of a Commission,” in which are discussed the Honor and the Condition of the Ministry; the Task: the awakening of the soul, the enlightenment of the understanding, the conversion of the will, the conscience purified, the af fections renewed. Then follow three chap ters in which man’s desires, understanding and will are thoroughly diagnosed from the Scriptural view-point. The remaining ten_ chapters deal with the following topics : Ministry and Witness, The Com mission, The Sense of Need, The Sense of Sin, The Minimum of Truth, The Min imum of Works, Salvation, Idolatry, En- samples and Conclusion. The book is deeply spiritual through out, insisting on repentance, faith, confes sion and holy living as the only true ex pression of a saved life. It shows a deep and sympathetic insight into human na ture and an abounding faith in the power of the living Christ to save all classes and conditions of sinners. It is a book of facts, not of theories. Actual incidents are re lated in illustration of the truths ad vanced. A friend of mine who is no mean student of psychology, declared to me that this book was one of the finest prac tical works on psychology that he had ever read. The incidents oi conversions are thrilling, and will cause every true believer to lift his heart in thanksgiving to God for these demonstrations that the old Gospel has lost none of its power in Japan, at least. And it will send every

true believer to his knees in prayer to ask that God will make him also the kind of a Christian through whom He can work in just the same way in our own land. Read it by all means and enjoy a rich spiritual feast. 310 pages. Price

The H ak-kas, a Unique People One of the most influential of China’s many tribes is the Hak-kas of South China. They speak a distinct dialect, live mostly in the interior, and are estimated to number from thirty to fifty millions. They are a virile, aggressive race, pro ducing many leaders in the political, com mercial, educational and religious life of the awakening China. Very little missionary work has been done in the Hak-ka territory, where mil lions of these people are to be found. In making a religious survey some years ago, it was found that the sections where the Hak-kas predominate were the most neg lected in China. The various missionaries working with the tribes speaking Can tonese and Mandarin cannot preach the Gospel to these Hak-kas—it must be spoken in the Hak-ka language. The vast untouched territory occupied by these people, but without a messenger, has been much on the hearts of a group of interested men . and women in this country for several years. After much prayer and conference a mission was re cently organized, and incorporated under the laws of thé State of New York, with the ONE PURPOSE of preaching the Gospel to these needy souls. Dr. A, C. Gaebelein was made chairman of this special mission, Col. E. N. Sanctu ary treasurer, and Paul H. Graef secre tary, with some twenty other faithful ser- vants of God to conduct this mission of evangelism, including Drs. Geo. H. Dow- kontt, David Miller, Revs. Joseph A. Davis, Herbert Hogg, H. H. Coleman, Clarence E. Mason, E. C. Miller, H. A. Ironside, Roland K. Armes, Dr. Wm. H. Hockman of Moody Bible Institute, Dr. R. L. -Moyer of Minneapolis, and Rev. John H. Hunter of the Bible Insti tute of , Los Angeles. This Special Mission to the Hak-kas sends out a plea to God’s faithful .ones everywhere to pray that men and women of faith and wisdom, full of the Holy Ghost, may be prepared of the Lord for this great task. Literature explaining the plans and pro posed work of this special mission may be secured by writing to the Hak-ka Mis sion, Inc., or Col. E. N. Sanctuary, 156 Fifth Ave., New York.
