June 2— “There is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother" (Prov. 18:24). How many a mother can tell—It was at the sick-bed of my child, I first looked to Christ and lived? How many a father can tell—It was over the grave of my first-born I had unfolded to me the love of an unchanging God? How many a brother can tell—It was over buried af fection I received a new meaning to the words “And there is a Friend that stick eth closer than a brother” ? How many a crushed spirit can tell—It was when for tune was broken,' and disappointment sent its rankling arrow to my heart, and the visions of young hope vanished like a dream,—that I was first driven to the true Intercessor; felt the value of prayer; saw the preciousness of the Ever-living, Ever-loving! It was when the ocean of life was strewed with wrecks that I was led to “the Rock which is higher than I” ? — J. R. Macduff. — o — June 3— “Where two or three are gath ered together in my name, there am I in the midst” (Matt. 18:20).
evil one is ready enough to suggest doubts of our having our heavenly Father’s sym pathy and understanding! It is not the ex citement of active battle, nor the glory of wounds honestly earned in the fight, but just the springs of life running low, so that nothing seems “worth while.” Now look at this prayer, and see what answers we can find to its spirit. The Levites had chanted out some of God’s praises ;• they had rehearsed His glories in creation, and in preserving all He had made; they told the story of His dealings with Abraham and the children of Israel—on through the wilderness history, and the many re bellions of the people, His many for- bearings and forgivings. Then it seems as if the heart failed at the whole thing, and the cry comes, “Oh, let not all this weariness seem little before Thee!” Now listen: “He knoweth our frame, He re- membereth that we are dust” (Ps. 103: 14). Never think He does not care, or does not realize. We find “Jesus, being wearied, . . . . sat thus on the well” (St. John 4:6), too exhausted to go any further—can He not understand our sink ing? —o— May 31— “Behold, I send you forth" (Luke 10:3). . We cry often to God to work, when it is for us to ,work first. We cry to Him to unleash His power, when it is for us first to do all in our power, by prayer and confession, to put away sin from our hearts and our churches; to lay aside the weights we so often carry; to abandon all unholy alliances with the world, and to live more like the pilgrims and strangers
we are called to be; to show more signs of spiritual life in the midst of spiritual death. The fault can be only with us, for after eighteen centuries the Saviour’s power is still undiminished, His luster is undimmed, His love is undaunted.— Dr, Northcote Deck. — o — June 1— “He shall dwell oh high " (Isa. 33:16)., It is easier for a consecrated Christian to live an out-and-out life for God than to live a mixed life. A soul redeemed and sanctified by Christ is too large for the shoals and sands of a selfish, worldly, sin ful life. The great steamship St, Paul could sail in deep water without an effort, but she could make no progress in the shallow pool, or on the Long Beach sands; the smallest tugboat is worth a dozen of her there; but out in mid-ocean she could distance them in an hour. Be loved, your life is too large, too glorious, too divine for the small place that you are trying to live in. Your purpose is too petty; arise and dwell on high in the resurrection life of Jesus and the inspir ing hope of His blessed coming. Rise with thy risen Lord, Ascend with Christ above, And in the heavenlies walk with Him, Whom seeing not, you love. Walk as a heavenly race, Princes of royal blood; Walk as the children of the light, The sons and heirs of God. —Days of Heaven upon Earth.
Our inability to realize the presence of Jesus will not alter the fact of His being there. When we are weak and suffering, when the shadows begin to gather over our senses, there may be no direct con sciousness of the Master’s presence. I t1 will be the last trial of our faith in Him, whom not having seen we love. But He will be there, though shrouded in the morning mist. At such a time, and under such circumstances, it will be well to re view the past, and to recall all the mercy Both tor $2.oo A Whole Year’s Subscrip tion to Two Helpful Mag azines at a Money-Saving Price!
