THE LASTING THRILL OF A ROLLER COASTER RIDE FAMILY FUN

THE KONECKY JOURNAL AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2024

Dropping hundreds of feet at high speeds, feeling out of control, losing your sense of direction — why would anyone buy a ticket for this?

a 70-mph ride that hurtles down a 200-foot drop at a 90-degree slope.

For some people, terror is a pleasurable experience, sparking joy, happiness, and excitement. For them, a roller coaster ride is a chance to chase an adrenaline rush in a controlled setting (where a jail sentence is not a risk). Sensation-seeking behavior is tied to higher levels of dopamine in the brain. For others, however, riding a roller coaster sparks anxiety, fear, or even terror. My daughter Jade was frightened of roller coasters when she was small, but she is overcoming that now. I’m happy to say that at 9 years old, she has become more adventurous and is starting to enjoy roller coasters. This will allow my wife and me a chance to get back on the roller coaster, too. One of the things I have found, however, is that while I still love roller coasters, some of the newer, fancier ones are more challenging. Let’s just say I don’t have the same kind of motion sickness tolerance I once did. Our vestibular system, which helps us maintain our balance when everything around us is moving, loses efficiency as we grow older, making us feel more nauseous or dizzy after a hair-raising ride. Younger riders adapt more quickly. Nevertheless, I can still tolerate the ups and downs — a lot better than I can the all-arounds. Maybe that’s a good metaphor for life. My family and I don’t have any roller coaster rides planned in the near future. But that could change, at any time. As we move deeper into the summer, I wish you a pleasant season, with as many roller coaster experiences as you desire — but no more!

That heart-stopping experience draws millions of roller coaster fans to take these thrill rides each year. Aug. 16 is National Roller Coaster Day, when two pioneers received the first U.S. patent for a wooden roller coaster, a model that debuted as Loop the Loop on Coney Island.

I have been reflecting on why I keep riding these beasts and going back for more. Life has its ups and downs, and sometimes that

can feel like a roller coaster. Maybe that’s

“LIFE HAS ITS UPS AND DOWNS, AND SOMETIMES THAT CAN FEEL LIKE A ROLLER COASTER. MAYBE THAT’S WHY I ENJOY ROLLER COASTERS SO MUCH.”

why I enjoy roller coasters so much.

As a kid growing up in Illinois, I loved going to theme parks. My family and I would

go to Six Flags Great America

near Chicago, or Six Flags St. Louis, for the big, wild rides. In that era, Six Flags Great America offered a roller coaster called Deja Vu, which took a drop of 170-plus feet at an exhilarating 66 mph. My wife, daughter, and I went this past Christmas to Busch Gardens Tampa Bay and had a wonderful time riding some pretty fast and furious roller coasters. The rides there include Iron Gwazi, a coaster that travels at 76 mph and tips riders upside-down three times, and SheiKra,

Introducing the Smart Notebook!

Welcome to the Future, Where Pen Meets Pixel

The future is now! Practically everything is smart — TVs, phones, even refrigerators. But note- taking still needs a 21st-century makeover.

Wouldn’t it be easier if everything you wrote appeared digitally on your phone screen? Sure, you could jot down important information with word processors, but studies show that writing by hand has many benefits, including creating a more profound connection to the content. Introducing a Truly Smart Notebook Previous attempts at modernizing the notebook didn’t quite succeed. Their designs relied on a digital screen or polymer alternative to pages, options that didn’t have a natural paper feel. That’s why the new Moleskine Smart Notebook is a complete game-changer. What looks like a regular journal is one of the most mind-blowing advancements in recent tech. The set comes with a notebook, a pen with a refill, and a charger. When you open it and start writing — with genuine ink on actual paper — it automatically saves your notes and sketches digitally onto your phone via Bluetooth, thanks to N-code technology. What Is N-Code Technology? A tiny sensor in the pen’s tip captures super fine dots on the page. These dots allow the sensor to read data as you write or draw to instantly transmit the information digitally. You can then edit in the app or erase on the page to see those changes reflected on your screen. There’s even a highlighting feature for making key points stand out; you can also add color! When finished, you can save or share your notes as an image or PDF or export them to Microsoft Word or PowerPoint. Plus, they even have refills on both ink and paper for when you run out. If you want to fully bring your notebook into the digital age, consider a smarter option bridging the gap between traditional note-taking and the internet age. Why waste time transcribing your notes when you can increase efficiency and improve your workflow with one simple tool?

Steer Clear of Danger During Major Storms STORMY ROADS AHEAD

Download These Books Today ! YOUR LEGAL RESOURCE Driving defensively is always a wise practice, but it is especially important during major storms. In a rush to escape, other motorists may drive recklessly or be distracted. Try to keep a five-second gap between you and the vehicle in front of you. After the car ahead passes a certain point in the road, five seconds should elapse before you reach the same point. Check your mirrors and blind spot frequently for other motorists speeding or changing lanes. We are in the midst of hurricane season here in Florida, and I hope we aren’t hit by a major storm. However, in the spirit of readiness, here are a few basic safety rules to keep in mind if you are on the road during a severe storm. We see many drivers making similar mistakes in these high-stress situations. Traffic signals often go dark during power outages, and drivers who fail to notice may come speeding through intersections. Our firm has handled many personal injury cases involving collisions caused by this kind of negligent driving.

Keep a firm grip on the wheel. Winds must reach 74 mph before a storm is classified as a hurricane, so staying on the road can be a challenge. While this may seem self- evident, handling your cellphone or turning to check on children in the back seat can leave you at risk of losing control of your vehicle during sudden gusts of high wind. Heavy commercial vehicles are especially vulnerable, so keep as safe a distance from them as possible. Finally, don’t try to drive through high water. Your car can be swept off the road by even a foot of moving water, and driving through it can cause irreversible damage to your vehicle. As we move through this season of unpredictable weather, don’t hesitate to call us for advice on any accident or personal injury damage you may sustain. We are here to help.
