This planner is one of many tools you can use to help you graduate. If updated regularly, you can track your credits, units, and assignments to stay on track for your bigger goals. When planning your month, make sure to consider any potential hurdles - don’t forget holidays, alternative assessments, assignments or classes that require internet, etc. Think carefully about anything that could possibly trip you up, and write it down in this planner to make sure nothing gets between you and graduation. GETTING STARTED HOW TO USE YOUR PLANNER
NOTES 4
Take your planning to the next level and write down all your ideas and tasks to get through each unit.

SKILLS SPOTLIGHT COMMUNICATION The ability to effectively express thoughts, feelings, ideas, and challenges is key to effectively navigating through school and adult life in general. It’s also important that students learn to recognize their audience and tailor communication styles appropriately for different groups of people (for instance, communication with a professor or boss will likely have a different tone than communication with friends or classmates).

SKILLS SPOTLIGHT COLLABORATION Be prepared to interact with others whose backgrounds, worldviews, and ways of thinking are not necessarily like yours. You must be able to embrace differences as an opportunity to create better work instead of seeing those differences as a threat. It’s also important to know how to navigate conflicts and disagreements when
they do arise in a way that’s respectful and productive.

• When organizing your content, you will be expected to: - Introduce a topic
ARGUMENTATIVE WRITING • You will be asked to write argumentative papers that support your analysis of a text or topic using enough relevant evidence to legitimately support your claim(s). • You should be comfortable introducing your argument(s) and counterarguments clearly and accurately. • Establish the importance of your claim and make a distinction between your claim and any opposing claims. • Create an organization for your argument that provides a logical sequence to claim(s), counterclaims, reasons, and evidence. • You should also consider your audience‘s values and possible biases. • As you develop your argument, treat your claims and counterclaims equitably, taking into account what your audience knows as well as what concerns they might have. • Be sure to omit personal bias! Conclude with a statement that supports the argument. YOU’RE ABOUT TO ENTER A NEW ERA OF WRITING! The Common Core State Standards ask students to write and think in a different fashion, so we are, too! Because Common Core asks students to think deeper about subjects, you are going to need to write deeper as well. Below are some pointers on the main styles of writing you will be asked to complete throughout your coursework, which are: argumentative writing, informative/explanatory writing, and narrative writing. Note the use of the word “writing” as opposed to “essay.” This is because the writing you’ll be doing may go well beyond essays. ENGLISH HELP WRITING FOR THE COMMON CORE STANDARDS 1
- Arrange ideas, concepts, and information to show interrelationships - Build elements upon the previous one in order to create a cohesive flow. - Develop a topic - Organize graphics (if used) - Provide multimedia when useful - Use transitions and syntax to link together the major sections of the text - Write a concluding statement that supports the information presented - Choose a formal style and objective tone • Finally, when analyzing content you should: - Decide what organization is most effective for purpose, audience, and task - Determine what facts are the most significant - Determine the most effective way to integrate multimedia • In conclusion, as with the argumentative writing, you should develop a strong formal style appropriate for your task, in which you maintain a tone that is free of bias. NARRATIVE WRITING • You’ll be expected to write narratives which convey an experience that is real or imagined. • Your writing should have form or structure based on a progression of events that build on each other. In other words, consider the pacing and structure of your plot. • As with all good writing, you should select effective details and use precise language. • You should establish point(s) of view, introduce a narrator, develop characters, and present a situation or problem. • You should be aware of and apply narrative techniques including dialogue, description, and plot in order to develop experiences, events, and/or characters choosing words that create vivid pictures. • You should provide a conclusion to the events you set out at the beginning of your narrative.

PROOFREADING In all good writing, revision and proofreading is a necessity. You should proofread any writing you do at least once. Check for grammar, spelling, and writing issues such as:
2
INFORMATIVE AND EXPLANATORY WRITING
• You’ll be expected to write informative texts that examine and communicate complex ideas, concepts, or information clearly and accurately. • To do this effectively, you will need to select, organize, and analyze your content. • In selecting content you should: - Use relevant and sufficient facts, definitions, details, and quotes - Use sources that are appropriate to task, audience, and purpose - Choose precise words and domain-specific vocabulary as well as metaphors, similes, and analogies
• Making sure your writing is legible, if handwritten • Indenting the first sentence of each paragraph • Eliminating sentence fragments • Using commas and apostrophes correctly • Capitalizing words as required
• Using quotations marks for quotations • Blending all quotations into your writing
