of unstable character who are like the stony ground with shallow sub-soil which encourages the seed to grow and then let it die because they have no depth. There are plenty of disciples like that. They listen to the Word of God and enthusiastically begin to obey but soon their enthusiasm wanes when the difficulties come. They leave behind a trail of unfinished tasks and good inten tions. Are you that kind of disciple? Then ask the Lord to deepen you. Give yourself to prayer, Bible-reading, wor ship and self-discipline and He will transform you as He did Matthew. The Choked Life Neither was Matthew one of the mul titude who allow their spiritual growth to be choked by the cares and riches of this life. That had been the great sin of his unregenerate days. His love for riches had made him forsake the fellow ship of his countrymen to become a quisling for the Romans in order to become rich. He knew only too well the danger of material things but do you? You probably do not have too much wealth to worry you but you are in danger of the choked life if your every day tasks, however good, are crowding out God and the needs of the soul. Fruitful discipleship comes only to those who are willing to pay the price. QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION As we start on the path of disciple ship are we any better than Levi? Why is it so hard to persuade the average churchgoer to surrender to God? What can God do to transform the per sonality? What sort of fruitfulness should be expected as disciples? T H E K I N G ' S B U S I N E S S

The first of today’s Scripture read ings tells of the call of Levi to dis- cipleship. He is better known as Mat thew (see also Matt. 9:9-13, Luke 5:27-32). In his lost condition Matthew was a publican or taxgatherer, and as such, an official of the occupying power. The rapacity and dishonesty associated with this profession would make him wealthy, but at the terrible cost of the ostracism and hatred of his fellow- countrymen. Our Lord saved him from this and transformed him until he be came the mind that the Holy Spirit could use in the first Gospel. Our sec ond Scripture outlines the pitfalls that he had to avoid on the path of dis- cipleship. The Hardened Heart Matthew was not one of those dis ciples who listen to the Word and guid ance without responding. His heart was no wayside path so hardened by use that there could be no lodging place for the seed. Our Lord had already warned the disciples of this danger by the par able of the house built on the sand (Matt. 7:26,27). This parable closely followed the Sermon on the Mount and was specifically aimed at him that hear- eth these sayings of mine and doeth them not. Do you know that every time you refuse to follow God’s Word and obey His will, it becomes harder for you to respond next time? If this process continues without repentance the heart of the disciple may become so hard that as soon as the seed of the Word falls, Satan will take it away. Only un conditionally surrendered Christians can hope to become useful and fruitful dis ciples. The Unstable Character Neither was Matthew one of those
