and better until that day when he would have the privilege of having a part in the glorious out-resurrection from among the dead (v. 11). It is clear from the Scriptures that there are two resurrections, the resurrection of the just unto life and the resurrection of the wicked unto damnation. See John 5:29; Rev. 20:4, 5, etc. Paul, in the passage before us, speaks of the resur rection unto life when there will be brought to consummation many aspects of our salvation. Not for anything would Paul give up this holy and glo rious prospect. Paul’s Desire for the Prize 12-17 Paul here recognizes that, though he has been wonderfully saved, yet he has not reached full maturity in his Chris tian life. This he earnestly desires to do (v. 12). In order to do this he realizes that he must keep his eye upon the goal (v. 13). He must not he dwelling upon the failures of the past. God’s plan for his life must be upper most in his life. In verse 14 Paul thinks of the prize which God promises for faithful service at the appearing of His Son. The prize here is not the “high calling” itself. Paul was already sure of that (2 Tim. 1:9). What Paul wanted to win was the prize or reward that will be given at the time of the up-calling to those who have run well the race. And this was Paul’s desire for all the followers of the Lord Jesus Christ (vv. 15-17). Memory Verse: “ In God I have put my trHst; I will not fear” (Psa. 56:4). Paul, the great missionary, was one of the bravest Christians about whom we read in the Word of God. One day Paul called to him the leaders of the church at Ephesus. He knew that he would never see these Christian friends again. Paul reminded these men how he had faithfully served His Lord among them, preaching to them in large groups and visiting them in their homes to tell them more about his Saviour. Paul knew that suffering for his Lord awaited him as he journeyed to Jeru salem. After he had talked lovingly with his friends, he knelt down and prayed with them. They wept and kissed him as he left them, never to see them again upon the earth. In his letter to the Corinthian Chris tians, Paul speaks of some of the things which he suffered that he might faith fully preach the gospel. Five times his enemies had beaten him; once he was stoned; once he was shipwrecked; he was frequently in danger from robbers and from the enemies of Christ, and constantly his body was in pain. Often he was hungry, thirsty, cold, and naked. Once he was let down through a win dow in a basket over the edge of a wall T H E K I N G ’ S B U S I N E S S Helps for the Children Paul, A Brave Follower Acts 20:17-24; 2 Cor. 11:24-33
