Welcome to the Altra Future Valleys

Welcome to the very first Altra Future Valleys , a brand-new trail running event created especially for children and young people who are ready to discover the trails. Future Valleys gives young runners the chance to experience the joy of trail running, build confidence in the outdoors and enjoy the adventure of exploring the Lake District in a safe, supportive and fun event environment. Whether it’s your first time on a trail or you’ve already caught the trail running bug, Future Valleys is all about getting outside, challenging yourself, making new memories and enjoying every step of the journey. With a fully waymarked route and plenty of encouragement along the way, you can focus on having fun and soaking up the adventure. We hope every Future Valleys runner crosses the finish line feeling proud, inspired to keep exploring the outdoors and excited for their next adventure. And, of course, no Future Valleys finish would be complete without a well- earned Freddo waiting at the finish line!

The big day is almost here and we want to answer your event day questions so you can focus on enjoying your run and soaking up the views and atmosphere that the Lake District has to offer.

The Future Valleys event will start and finish on Lake Road, just outside of the Theatre by the Lake, Keswick, CA12 5DJ. Please ensure you arrive in plenty of time to register and assemble ahead of your race start.

The main event site is located at Lakeside car park in Keswick (what3words /// rails.struggle.rivals) which is where the event village is located. The event will start and finish on Lake Road just outside of the Theatre by the Lake. You can travel to the start in a number of ways (see next page) . Wherever possible, we encourage you to travel by public transport – it’s the most sustainable way to reach the event and helps keep traffic to a minimum in Keswick.

For travel to Lakeside Carpark - Keswick

By Bus Keswick and Ambleside are well served by local buses. Please look into using public transport as your first option, by visiting https:// www.stagecoachbus.com/ By Train If you are coming from further afield, then pairing mainline train services to Penrith (for Keswick) with the local bus services will give you the most relaxing and scenic route to the event. Visit https://www.avantiwestcoast.co.uk/ for more information. By Bike We would encourage people to cycle to the event where they can, particularly if you’re spectating and can spare the energy! Bike parking will be available at both Keswick.

If public transport isn’t an option and you’re travelling by car, please car share where possible. Parking is available, but spaces are very limited, so we’d encourage you to book as early as possible. By Car For those that do wish to travel by car, we would ask you to car share where possible. Parking To minimise the disruption to Keswick, and make your weekend as painless as possible we have a dedicated 13 Valleys Ultra event car park a 15 minute walk from the Start and Finish line. 5% of the income from this will go directly to Keswick Town Council as they fundraise to install a new inclusive play area in Fitz Park. There are limited spaces, so we recommend booking early.

The car Park is at Springs Farm on Springs Road (Postcode: CA12 4AN)

The Car Park is available to pre-book here If you are arriving in the early morning, or departing late at night, please be mindful of residents in the area and keep noise to a minimum. The car park will operate on number plate recognition; you will not receive a pass before the event. Pricing Pre-booked parking will be charged based on arrival day. All cars can then stay until Sunday.

Electric Vehicle Charging If you’re travelling by electric vehicle, we encourage you to plan your charging stops before setting off. There are a range of public charging points across Cumbria and the Lake District. To find nearby charge points and check live availability, visit the Zapmap live map: https://www.zapmap.com/live.

You will be required to collect you/ your child’s race pack from the registration team who will be located on the ground floor of the Theatre by the Lake (what3words ///incensed.microfilm.fuse) , which is opposite the start/ finish line on Lake Road. You / your child will be allocated to a wave named after one of the iconic Lake District valleys featured on the Altra 13 Valleys Ultra route, such as Windermere, Buttermere or Langdale. Once you have collected your race number, simply attach it to the front of your t-shirt or running top with safety pins and you’re all set!

All race numbers will have a timing chip attached so we can monitor participants’ progress on the route throughout the day.

All accompanying adults attending the event must wear their ‘accompanying adult’ bib.

Please make sure to allow yourself plenty of time to register the morning of the event, it may be busy and therefore, queues are likely.

Our event village is located in Lakeside car park adjacent to the start and finish on Lake Road.

It will welcome all of our brand sponsors, event village exhibitors, food vendors and a bar!

This is your opportunity to get some great running products at special prices, pick up some official 13 Valleys Ultra merchandise or grab some food and drinks and for your supporters to gather while waiting for you to cross the finish line. We encourage people to bring cash and card.

Visit our official merchandise tent in the event village, where you’ll find a range of exclusive 13 Valleys Ultra clothing and accessories. A selection of items can also be pre-ordered online for collection at the event, helping to ensure you don’t miss out on popular products. Lake District Foundation – The LDF will be at the event village with their “pre-loved” pop up shop! So come with your old running and / or outdoor kit that you can give to them. All our participants and spectators can then purchase any gear they want from them with a donation of their choice to the Foundation.

Joey’s Café – selling pastries and delicious coffees in the morning, and their tasty loaded hash browns throughout the day.

Yardies Jamaican Street Food – Filling the event village with delicious smells of their incredible jerk chicken and pork, hard to resist!

5% of each entry fee goes to the Lake District Foundation to support environmental projects protecting and celebrating this magnificent part of the planet.

We want every young person and family to have a safe, fun and memorable day at Future Valleys. Please take a moment to read the following information before your run. Stay on the marked route: Both the 2km and 5km courses are fully waymarked and marshalled. Please follow the route at all times to keep the event safe and fair for everyone. Respect the countryside: If you need to open a gate on the course, please make sure you close it behind you to help keep livestock safe. Leave no trace: Please take any litter home with you or use the bins provided. We’re privileged to run in the Lake District, so let’s help keep it beautiful for everyone to enjoy. Cheer from the sidelines: Family and friends are encouraged to support runners around the course. Please keep the route clear so every young runner has plenty of space to enjoy their adventure. Medical: There will be a medical presence at the main event site, but if you come across a runner in need on the route, please stay with them and alert Event Control on the number listed on your race number. It’s likely that there will be a marshal or member of the event team in the area so make sure to call on them for help and assistance. Most importantly... have fun! Whether it’s your first trail run or your fiftieth, enjoy the experience, encourage one another and celebrate crossing the finish line together.

Don’t worry if you don’t get a chance to look beforehand, both the 2km and 5km routes are fully waymarked with pink flags and signs, and our volunteers will be there to help guide runners along the way.

Way marking is a controversial subject in the National Park. We have to find the balance between helping marking the running route but at the same time protecting what makes the event so special – the environment, the people and animals that call it home.

Keep your eyes peeled for the pink flags and signs along the route: they’ll show you where to go and help keep you on track.

Please leave all flags and signs in place so every runner can follow the route safely. Our amazing team of volunteers will also be out on the course to cheer you on, point you in the right direction and help make sure everyone has a fun and safe run.

The Future Valleys event will finish in the same location as it starts on Lake Road, just outside of the Theatre by the Lake, Keswick, CA12 5DJ.

Future Valleys is all about adventure, confidence and having fun on the trails. As this isn’t a competitive event, there are no trophies or prizes. Every participant will receive a finisher’s medal to celebrate their achievement.

Take a moment to soak it all in, you’ve earned it!

Our official photographers from Marathon Photos will be waiting to capture your finish line moment, so don’t forget to smile as you cross the line. Your photos will be available to view after the event here. Once you’ve collected your medal and treats, be sure to cheer on the other runners as they complete their own Future Valleys adventure!

In 2017 the Lake District was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site; this designation specifically covers the 13 Valleys that make up the Lake District National Park. We’re donating 5% of every entry fee to the Lake District Foundation, the charity working to protect this magnificent part of the planet. The Lake District Foundation supports the sustainable future of Cumbria and the National Park through low carbon initiatives, fixing the fells, planting hedgerows and much more.

We are trying our best to make this event as sustainable as possible. Here are a few things we are doing:

• Using local staff and suppliers where possible to reduce travel and support local communities. • Reusing event signage wherever possible and avoiding single- use signs. Wayfinding signs include a contact number so any missed signs can be reported and collected. • Providing vegetarian and vegan options at all feed stations. • Reducing unnecessary event merchandise by not providing race T-shirts, and instead offering locally made finisher medals produced from more sustainable materials. • 5% of each entry for the event is being donated to the Lake District Foundation to take care of the trails we use across the weekend.

If you’re wondering what you can do to help, there are a few things we suggest:

• Consider car sharing: sharing a car with another 3 people reduces your travel emissions by a quarter and can be comparable to public transport.

• Consider using public transport to come to the event.

• Stay longer: don’t just stay for the event, make a trip out of it. Stay longer, see the sites and combine the event with a holiday, maximizing the benefit of your travel! The Lake District National Park has plenty to offer! • Visit the Lake District Foundation pre-loved shop! The LDF will be at the event village with their “pre-loved” pop up shop! So come with your old running and / or outdoor kit that you can give to them. All our participants and spectators can then purchase any gear they want from them with a donation of their choice to the Foundation.

Whether this is your very first trail run or one of many adventures, we hope you enjoy every moment out on the trails, embrace the challenge and have lots of fun along the way. Cross that finish line with a smile, collect your well-earned Freddo and take pride in what you’ve achieved today. We hope this is just the beginning of many more adventures in the outdoors.
