they existed before birth into this world; and that birth was only an illusion: “ Never born and never dying” is her expression, so naturally the race has neither increased nor decreased but has remained in status quo. You are not real, and your chil dren are not real. However, as in the matter of eating, and various other exercises of the flesh that people will persist in doing, she says this of marriage: “Until time matures hu man growth, marriage and progeny will continue unprohibited in Chris tian Science” ( Miscellaneous Writ ings, p. 286). Think this over, my friends. Chris tian Scientists are to look forward to the day when they will neither marry nor bear children. “ Until it is learned that generation rests on no sexual basis, let marriage continue” ( S <&H, p. 274, 74th ed.). She goes on to explain this idea quite fully: “ Human procreation, birth, life and death, are subjective states of the human erring mind. They are the phenomena of mortal ity — nothingness; they illustrate mortal mind and body—neither real nor eternal,” ( Miscellaneous Writ ings, p. 286). T his is really terrible: it just unreally born child is a denial of true marriage. “At present, more spiritual conception and education of children will serve to illustrate the superiority of spiritual power over sensuous, and usher in the dawn of God’s creation wherein they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels. To abolish mar riage at this period, and maintain morality and generation, would put ingenuity to ludicrous shifts; yet this is possible in Science , although it is today problematic. We look to future generations for ability to comply with absolute science, when marriage shall be found to be man’s oneness with God—the unity of eternal love,” (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 286). Do you realize what she is implying, that while at present marriage is not prohibited by Christian Science, even though they do not perform marriages in their churches, they look forward to a day when men and women will be able to “ comply with absolute science” and thus abolish marriage?
It is sad, but true, that the Chris tian Science churches include many former Methodists, Presbyterians, Baptists and members of other Prot estant churches, who were previously schooled in “materialism,” and who find it difficult to throw off the shackles of reality. However, now that Christian Science has established Sunday schools, and young men and women are being indoctrinated with the delusions of Christian Science from infancy, they are expecting these new generations to do away with marriage. Christian Science and Divorce What about divorce? Here is her statement: “ I hereby state in un mistakable language the following statute in the morale of Christian Science: A man or woman, having voluntarily entered into wedlock, and accepted the claims of the marriage covenant, is held in Christian Science as morally bound to fulfill all the claims growing out of this contract, unless such claims are relinquished by mutual consent of both parties, or this contract is legally dissolved.” (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 297). In other words, Christian Science approves of divorce, and this explains why it is that so many Christian Science homes go on the rocks. This language is unmistakable. Christian Scientists who are married are held in Christian Science as morally bound to fulfill the marriage con tract unless they mutually consent to relinquish those claims; that is to say, husband and wife may come to see that the body is unreal, thereby dissolving the marriage relationship. They may dissolve it “ scientifically” or in civil court. The Lord Jesus Christ stated as we have quoted: “What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder” (Mark 10:9). This union of flesh is not to be dissolved by mutual consent or by legal act. Paul, writing by the Spirit, spoke clearly on this matter: “The woman . . . is bound by the law [the law of God] to her husband so long as he liveth” (Rom. 7:2). Not only does Mrs. Eddy thus put her approval upon divorce, but she has some advice with regard to motherhood that is most shocking and unscriptural. In her book Miscellaneous Writ ings, page 289, we read this: “ Hu man nature has bestowed on a wife
The Lord Jesus said of marriage: “ But from the beginning of the crea tion God made them male and fe male. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder” (Mark 10:6-9). But Mrs. Eddy, who was thrice- married and had a son, looked for ward to the day when marriage would be abolished. Does it not seem strange to you that no marriage ceremony is ever performed in a Christian Science building and that no Christian Sci ence reader or lecturer has ever offici ated at a marriage ceremony within a Christian Science building? They can secure a license and so have the same right in the eyes of the law in this regard as any judge, justice of the peace or minister of the Gospel. You will soon see why this is so when you read the statements Mrs. Eddy made in regard to marriage. N ot only are no marriages Eddy did not believe in marriage; she believed celibacy to be better, the unmarried state to be superior to the married, not just for one particu lar class but for everyone. She in dicated that the day would come when marriage among Christian Sci entists would be abolished. She in sinuated that young people should not marry, and that parents should not encourage their children to do so. She went a step further and declared that the generation of the human race was not dependent upon a sexual basis at all, that eventually offspring would be the result of a mental operation only! Now this is of course consistent with the basic delusion of Christian Science—that there is no reality, and that matter only seems to be, but is not. Since Christian Science teaches that the body is not real, naturally marriage, which is a union of flesh, could not be real. In other words, two bodies could be no more real than one! Mrs. Eddy also taught that all hu man beings are co-existent with God;
performed, but Christian Scientists look forward to the day when all marriage will be prohibited. Actually, Mrs.
means that the birth of every child is not only not eternal, it is not real; and therefore, the unreal body of every
