S U N D A Y S C H O O L continued parable is? It is an earthly story with a heavenly meaning. Frequently the Lord Jesus told His listeners a parable to teach them some great truth concerning God and His plan for their lives. One of the parables the Saviour told was about two men who went into the temple to pray. One was a Pharisee who thought that no one could be as good in God’s sight as he. The other was a publi can or sinner whom the Pharisees hated. The Pharisee stood and talked to himself, although he called his speech praying. He thanked God that he was not as wick ed as other men, and he reminded God of his goodness. The publican felt him self to be so sinful that he would not even look up toward heaven when he prayed. He beat upon his breast to show his I sorrow for his sin and said, “ God, be merciful to me a sinner.” The Lord Jesus said that God heard the humble prayer of the publican, but the Pharisee’s prayer was unheard. In Matthew five the Lord Jesus gives some rules concerning prayer. He tells those who pray to quietly talk with God in the name of the Lord Jesus. Our prayer should be first for forgiveness of sin. Those who are not children of God can not pray any other prayer and expect God to answer. Prayer should include sorrow for sin, thanks for other blessings and for the answers to our prayers, wor shiping God and asking for the things of which we have need. The disciples said to their Lord, “ Lord, teach us to pray.” Daily this should be our request as we spend our quiet time with our Saviour. As a good healthy tree produces good fruit so the life into which Christ has come will bear the fruit of righteous conduct. Two Aspects of the New Life Col. 3 :5 -1 0 In becoming a Christian there is a dis tinct break with the past with all its sins and failure. In all the days of the be liever’s life there needs to be the prac tical application of this truth. There must be a constant putting to death of the sins of the flesh and a bringing to life of the things of the Spirit. There must be a putting off of the garments of sin and a putting on of the garments of righteous ness. The old man with his deeds needs to be put under foot and the new man which is after the image of Christ needs to be given full right of way. Paul was j writing to Christians as he gavé these exhortations. He was emphasizing the im portance of giving expression to that which every Christian has by virtue of [ his identification with Christ, namely, a new life of holy character.
