A Tribute to the WWII Flying Fortress Crews (702) 333-7777 WWW.CLAGGETTLAW.COM JUNE 2024 THE UNSUNG HEROES OF THE SKY

I recently watched the captivating Apple TV series “Masters of the Air.” It is a great series, and I was deeply moved by the incredible bravery and sacrifice of the WWII bomber crews who flew the legendary B-17

Despite the constant danger, these brave men continued to fly mission after mission. They knew the odds were stacked against them, but they persevered, driven by a sense of duty and a belief in the cause for which they fought. The bond among crew members was unbreakable, forged through shared experiences and the knowledge that they depended on each other for survival. The B-17 itself was a remarkable aircraft designed to withstand incredible punishment. It earned its “Flying Fortress” nickname due to its array of defensive armaments, including multiple machine gun turrets that allowed the crew to defend against enemy fighters from almost any angle. However, even the B-17’s resilience had its limits. Many crews never made it back from their missions. The impact of these losses on the airmen who survived was profound. They watched friends and comrades fall from the sky. The trauma of combat left indelible scars on their minds and hearts. Many struggled to adapt to civilian life after the war, haunted by the memories of what they had endured. Yet, despite the immense sacrifices these crews made, their contributions to the war effort cannot be overstated. The daylight bombing campaign played a crucial role in weakening Germany’s ability to wage war. The bravery and determination of the B-17 crews helped to pave the way for the Allied victory in Europe. As we reflect on Memorial Day, we should remember and honor these brave men and the other men and women who have served in the Armed Forces to ensure their stories are not lost to the passage of time. We must continue to share their

Flying Fortress. The series, based on the book by Donald L. Miller, sheds light on the harrowing experiences of these young men who risked their lives to bring the war to the heart of Nazi Germany. The B-17 Flying Fortress, a four-engine heavy bomber, was a symbol of American air power during World War II. It was designed to fly deep into enemy territory, delivering massive payloads of bombs to strategic targets. The crews who manned these aircraft were a special breed, facing unimaginable dangers with each mission. What struck me most while watching “Masters of the Air” was the shockingly low survival rate among these crews. The Eighth Air Force, which operated the majority of the B-17s, suffered staggering casualties. By the end of the war, over 47,000 of the 115,000 airmen had been killed, wounded, or captured. One of the main reasons for this high casualty rate was the decision to bomb during daylight hours. Unlike the British, who opted for nighttime bombing raids, the Americans believed that daylight precision bombing would be more effective in crippling Germany’s industrial capabilities. However, this decision came at a terrible cost. Flying during the day made the B-17s visible targets for German fighter planes and anti-aircraft guns. The crews faced relentless attacks, often flying through a barrage of flak and enemy fire. The series vividly portrays the terror and chaos inside the aircraft as shells tore through the fuselage, wounding or killing crew members.

experiences to educate future generations about the price of freedom and the valor of those who fought to defend it.

3 NOVEL GAMES FOR OUTDOOR FUN Exhilarating Backyard Competition

LADDER TOSS You play this game with 2–4 people split between two teams, each team with its own three-rung ladder set 15 feet apart. Teams take turns tossing their bolas (two balls connected by a nylon rope) underhanded, earning points for bolas that wrap around a rung of the opposing team’s ladder. The higher the rung your bola wraps around, the more points you get. The first team to reach 21 points wins! JENGA GIANT This is the classic game of Jenga made giant! In Jenga Giant, two players take turns pulling wood blocks from a tower standing about 5 feet tall. Over time, the blocks become crucial to the tower’s integrity, and each pull is a gravity-defying feat. If your pull causes the tower to collapse, you are out, and your opponent has to yell “Jenga!” at the top of their lungs.

While board game nights can be fun, nothing beats playing outside in this lovely weather! Lawn games have evolved past playing horseshoes in an overgrown field. What about Jenga Giant, Ladder Toss, or Flickin’ Chicken? You’ll want to try these three family-friendly games with family and friends. Here’s how to play. FLICKIN’ CHICKEN You can’t have a backyard party without a game of Flickin’ Chicken. No, this is not a menu item at a fast food restaurant — it’s a game of skill and daring played between 2–4 capable challengers. Each player chooses one of four uniquely colored Flickin’ Chickens, which they will use for the remainder of the game. In each of the nine rounds, one player throws the target disc as far as possible. Then, the goal of the game is to toss your chicken onto the target disc in the fewest number of throws possible. After the last round, the player with the lowest score is the victor.

Spread the Word About the Camp Lejeune Water Contamination Case TIME IS RUNNING OUT

From 1953 to 1987, the water supply at the U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina was contaminated with toxic chemicals, exposing military personnel, their families, and civilian workers to serious health risks. The contamination was caused by leaking storage tanks, industrial spills, and improper waste disposal, leading to the presence of harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the water. Exposure to these chemicals has been linked to various illnesses, including cancers, Parkinson’s disease, kidney and liver disease, birth defects, infertility, and others. In August 2022, Congress passed the Camp Lejeune Justice Act, allowing those exposed to the contaminated water for at least 30 days between Aug. 1, 1953, and Dec. 31, 1987, to file lawsuits against the U.S. government for damages.

The Act provides a two-year window for filing claims, with the deadline set for Aug. 10, 2024. Potential claimants, including veterans, family members, and civilian workers, must submit an Administrative Claim by this date. As the deadline approaches, it is crucial to raise awareness about the Camp Lejeune water contamination case and encourage those affected to take action. By spreading the word and supporting victims in their pursuit of justice, we can help ensure that they receive the compensation and support needed to cope with the ongoing health consequences of their exposure. Time is running out, and swift action is necessary to protect the rights of those affected by this tragic environmental disaster.
