ENNISKILLEN WORKHOUSE ENTRANCE BLOCK
STONE RESTORATION
S tone restoration expert, S McConnell & Sons Ltd, was called in to breathe life back into the Grade B2 listed Victorian Enniskillen Workhouse Entrance Block. The external walls were in need of cosmetic repair and some rebuilding work was also needed. “The building was in poor condition,” said Alan McConnell, company Director. “We cleaned and tidied up the old stonework, raked out the old joints and repointed
using lime mortar. Many stones had suffered deterioration externally and had to be retooled. Some stones had to be replaced, but fortunately limestone from a nearby quarry was sourced. It looks pristine now.” S McConnell and Sons’ craftsmen are renowned for their precise and detailed ornate carving skills. Commenting on the completed project, Alan said, “We are extremely experienced in working on restoration of old buildings and are incredibly proud to be a part of this project. “It’s an historical building and it’s great to see it being refurbished and kept as a useable space.”

LIME PLASTER S pecialist contractor, Seamus Breen Plastering displayed the finest quality workmanship in replacing the original lime plaster for the 178-year old Enniskillen Workhouse. Seamus Breen and his team of six applied four coats of lime cement– that’s a mix of course sand, fibres and 3.5 NHL (natural lime) – and finished with a render of lime putty to leave a smooth finish. Seamus said, “When we came on site the internal walls were in pretty bad shape. It took us four months to apply and dry the lime render and the final lime putty finish.” Seamus Breen Plastering is based in Tempo, Co. Fermanagh, but has worked on numerous churches and National Trust buildings across Northern Ireland. Commenting on the completed project, Seamus said, “I loved working on the Workhouse, knowing that what we are doing is a piece of a history that people can look back on, perhaps in another 100 years.”
