NEWS AND UPDATES FROM CIOB NORTHERN IRELAND HUB COMMITTEE… CIOB Assist – a helping hand for construction professionals

E very year, hundreds of people from across the construction industry find themselves facing unexpected health and financial challenges. For members of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), help is at hand through the CIOB Assist programme. Roger Gillespie FCIOB, is the chair of CIOB’s Northern Ireland hub and is also a trustee of CIOB Assist, “Since becoming a trustee of CIOB Assist in 2016, I have seen the valuable role it plays to help members, former members and even the families of members. It is a constant reminder that any of us could at some point be in a situation when we would value the services of CIOB Assist, and therefore I

encourage members to support it as much as they can.” Formerly the CIOB benevolent fund, and rebranded to CIOB Assist in 2021, the programme provided support for almost 500 CIOB members across the globe in 2022, an increase of around 60% from the previous year. Ten of the enquiries received were from members in Northern Ireland and fell under the categories of ill health, unemployment, membership fees and mental health. The support available includes financial help with work and personal situations including debt advice, managing finances while not working or managing the costs of training and personal development. In

total, more than £150,000 in grants was given out by the Assist programme last year. In many cases, financial worries lead to mental health and wellbeing concerns, and working alongside Anxiety UK, who operate globally, CIOB Assist can help with confidential and tailored support. This also extends to the dependent families of CIOB members. The service is also able to help with advice on employment issues such as employee rights. CIOB Assist relies on income from one-off and regular donations as well as from fundraising events, collections and legacy gifts. Staff and members of the Northern Ireland hub showcased the benefits of professional body membership during a successful ‘Meet the CIOB’ event in Belfast in January. Chair of the Northern Ireland hub, Roger Gillespie, said, “The engagement from the attendees who were able to hear and speak directly to CIOB staff and committee members was extremely positive. A big thank you as well to our guest speakers and exhibitors who all contributed to a very successful event.” Nick Cuffe FCIOB, Operations Director, ICW, said, “Following the event, our Belfast team is really looking forward to closer ties with CIOB during 2023.” BELFAST EVENT SHOWCASES CIOB MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS
