PROJECT

LESLEY PARKLANDS, KNOCKNAGONEY, EAST BELFAST

THE AWARDED FAMILY BUSINESS HAS BEEN RECOGNISED NOT ONLY FOR THEIR WORK IN PRIVATE HOUSING, BUT ALSO FOR COMMUNITY AND SPORTS CENTRES… AT THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY

T he Parkland Lesley apartments have revitalised a long-forgotten section of Holywood Road, but contractors P&K McKaigue are no strangers to transformation. Last year, the company won Restoration Project of the Year at the CEF Excellence Awards for their work on St Comgall’s Community Centre, in Belfast. The judges called the £7.2 million endeavour a credit to them and their client, Falls Community Council. The former school now includes new offices, conference and exhibition facilities, event spaces and a café, and the project aims to deliver economic, educational, social and cultural benefits for residents living and working nearby. FOR THE LOCAL PEOPLE P&K McKaigue delivered another flagship project for the people of Northern Ireland in 2022 with the Shantallow Community

Centre, in Derry city. Even with the challenges brought by the Covid-19

It was a very successful collaborative project in unprecedented circumstances.” The building contractors have a busy year ahead with yet another project that will benefit local communities. P&K McKaigue was delighted to be appointed as the main contractor for the Black Mountain Shared Space Project, in Belfast. The £5.5 million project proposal involves the creation of an iconic shared space facility of approximately 1,715 sq. m which will offer a range of integrated services and facilities to include indoor leisure, outdoor recreation, community space, capacity support, health and wellbeing, educational links, and multipurpose spaces. The project aims to remove physical barriers in the area and create a facility where cross-community programming can be delivered.

lockdown, the contractors restructured the space to offer a large sports hall, reception and administration areas, a fitness suite, a catering kitchen, toilets, showers and changing facilities. The centre welcomes people of all ages and has become the heart of a socially disadvantaged area. “We work across the full spectrum of sectors – industrial, commercial, private housing, social housing, public works etc, but our community and sports centre portfolio is particularly strong”, commented Padraig McKaigue, Contracts Director for P&K McKaigue. “Despite the unpredictable challenges of Covid-19, the Shantallow Community Centre project went very well thanks to the practical understanding and relationship between the client, ourselves and the design team.
