they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots” (Mk. 11:20). Probably the disciples were tempted to doubt as to whether anything had happened to the fig tree, but in the morning they knew. They saw it dried up from the roots. The withering had begun, not with the leaves, but with the roots. Sometimes we are tempted to look at the leaves, when God has spoken to the roots. If we could always see the leaves wither, there would be no need to exercise faith. When we do not immediately see, God gives us opportunity to exercise faith.—From Prevailing Prayer, by Zelma Argue. * If I have been buried with Christ, then God’s purpose is that the self-life shall be so submerged that only Christ henceforth is seen in me. If I have been reused again with Him, then God’s purpose is that day by day I should live and walk in newness of life. If I have been redeemed, and seated together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, then God’s purpose is that that position should be enjoyed in ordinary everyday experience . . . You say: “ That is all very well as a matter of theology, but the trouble is that my self-life is not dead.” No, quite true, and for that very reason God says: “ Reckon” it dead; and then the fact becomes real in experience as you lay hold of it by faith. — R eginald W allis . APRIL 5 Raised with H im "Like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life” (Rom. 6:4). “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things” (John 14:26). We are to use all our gifts of mind in the study of God’s Word. But the secret of the Word comes out when the Master Himself interprets it by His Holy Spirit. If these days . . . are going to be days of restoration for you and me, it is going to mean the interpretation of the Word of God through the Holy Spirit. May the Lord Himself draw near and unfold to us the Scriptures. If you have lost the joy of Bible study, get back to your Lord. — A . S t . J oh n T horpe . APRIL 6 The Great Interpreter

APRIL 1 For Me! “ The Son of God . . . loved me, and gave himself for me" (Gal. 2:20). O Christ, what burdens bowed Thy head! Our load was laid on Thee; Thou stoodest in the sinner’s stead, Didst bear all ill for me. A victim led, Thy blood was shed; Now there’s no load for me. The Holy One did hide His face— O Christ, ’twas hid from Thee! Dumb darkness wrapt Thy soul a space— The darkness due to me: But now that face of radiant grace Shines forth in light on me. — A n n e R. C ousin . APRIL 2 The Defeat o f Satan "Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4). It is foolish to underestimate the power of Satan, but it is fatal to overestimate it. There are people who talk too much about the devil, and too much about his power. His power is mighty, but it is not almighty: he is powerful, but he is not all-powerful. He is an absolutely defeated foe. Christ is the Stronger Man, and He has bound the strong man, and has despoiled him of his goods. As the representative Man in the wilderness, He met the devil, and He won a decisive victory over him; and He won it in the only way in which you and I can can win that same victory. He was led into the wilderness filled with the Holy Spirit; and the only weapon He had was the Word o f God.— R u th P axson . “ To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some” (1 Cor. 9:22). If we would be successful winners of souls we must be moved with compas sion for the lost and the perishing. We must sympathize with men in their sorrows and troubles, if we would hope to gain their affections and to do them good. —D. L. M oody . What we supremely need today is the buying up of opportunities as they come. And it is amazing, when once there is read iness to discern them, how constantly such opportunities are presented. I am convinced that far more people than we have imagined are waiting for 'clear, simple, honest, con vincing testimony to the things of Christ and the spiritual life.— S elected .
