Oh to be but emptier, lowlier, Mean, unnoticed, and unknown, And to God a vessel holier, Filled with Christ and Christ alone! Naught of earth to cloud the glory, Naught of self the light to dim, Telling forth His wondrous story, Emptied to be filled with Him. APRIL 28 When Strength Becomes Weakness “Let him that thiaketh he standeth take heed lest he fall" (1 Cor. 10:12). A man’s strong point is apt to become his weak point, when he is out of full touch with God. Moses was the meekest man, and no one ever lost his temper so badly and completely . . . Solomon was the wisest man, at the beginning. He became the stupidest moral fool, and so continued to the end. Elijah’s boldness and daring made a record, yet he ran away with cowardly swiftness from a woman’s threat. Job was esteemed the most patient of men, but was there ever a greater exhibition of hot, intolerant im patience than in his replies to his critics? He was the humblest of saints, and. quite unconsciously showed how proud a man could be. One should keep a keen eye on his strong points. And the eyesight is keen est here when the knees are bent. —S. D. G ordon . APRIL 29 Bearing Fruit “ Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit" (John 15:8). Barrenness was considered by women of old to be the greatest reproach under which they could live. Spiritual barrenness is also the greatest possible reproach to the church or to the individual Christian. If we abide in Him and He in us*—if we . . . are cruci fied with Christ—we shall be fruitful. Wherever you ripe fields behold, Waving to God their sheaves of gold; Be sure.some corn of wheat has died, Some saintly soul been crucified; Some one has suffered, wept, and prayed, And fought hell’s legions undismayed. —Alliance Weekly. “ Elijah . . . requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now O Lord, take away my life” (1 Ki. 19:1-4). The man who prayed to die never had a funeral; . . . the man who was heartbroken over his life work’s failure was one of the only two to stand with the Lord on the Mount of Transfiguration. . . Elijah seemed bound for death; he was bound for life. He said, “ It is enough.” God assured him: “My child, it is not enough; I have more work for you to do, before the chariots come at eventide.” Some one has said: “The smelter of Israel must himself go down into the crucible.” The wilderness is’ a holier, better preparation for another world«—for the experience of going in to see the King—- than are all the miracles and victories of Carmel. God sends us back into the terrific battle on our way to rapture.—Adapted from The Dawn. —How to Die Daily. APRIL 30 Not Enough

"O U R LIFE IS A STRUGGLE W ITH DEATH !" Seven words which tell a tragic story of a Christian’s life in Red Russia. Seven words which will burn themselves into the living consciousness of every forthright Christian man and woman. These words alone tell a tragic story of hunger, near-starvation, cruelty and stark misery . . . they are taken from one of the many pleading letters received from our brethren who exist in the land of Communism. Read, if you will please, this soul-stirring appeal so recently received: “My husband was working in God’s vineyard as you are, but now . . . eight months ago he was taken away from us not according to our will but according to the will of some one else. If the Lord tarry we might see him again after five years. My conditions are very difficult. I am left with two children of two and seven and a sixty-year-old mother to care for without any means. Our life is a struggle with death. Dear brother, if in your heart the flame of Christ’s love is burning for other Brethren and Sisters in Russia, please do not refuse to help me in my need. My children and myself are thanking you beforehand for your kind help.” V. G. W ill you help the suffering believers in Soviet Russia to carry their burden? As the Holy Spirit speaks to your heart, dear friend, to partici pate in the sufferings of Russia’s Believers, send your gifts to: RUSSIA INLAND RELIEF MISSION REV.
