This children’s center consists of a monolithic structure of exposed concrete walls with relatively small but deep openings and partially beveled frames. The plan was designed as a windmill with elongated rooms arranged around an atrium.

In Chile we have tried to impose open, public competitions that bring opportunities to young architects, who come with new ideas, transform the work and enrich points of view. - If there is no space and opportunities for young people, the structures become rigid. There must be a mechanism for people to join, the structures by themselves will not become more flexible. We Latin Americans know very well local connections and influences move everything, and in the end, they are always the same, when the interesting thing is to open up. Public competitions are held by law throughout the European Union. A municipality is required to call for tender for any project over 300 thousand euros, it can’t assign projects by hand. The desirable thing is that every public building is made by open competition. The Lugano Kindergarten in Switzerland was also by competition. How did you arrive at its conception? Here you worked with a repetitive modular unit as a working method, something very different from previous projects. - It is not out of vanity that architects say in each situation there is a different architecture, and that one does not impose his own language on the circumstances, but the circumstances generate the answers. That explains that, although a common thread can be seen, in your projects we can’t recognize the hand that identifies the author. - There are many architects that are like that, but we also think that, even if they don’t want to, architects with a signature style - like Calatrava, Gehry, Zaha Hadid - are summoned because of their own style and their stamp is required. On the other hand, since we win public competitions, we are not in any way forced to give a recognizable product and we are free to study each situation and decide what we can do with what we have and can do.
