emblematic in the conservation of our built heritage. Although there was an awareness of the historical sig- nificance and architectural value of the building, it was relevant to define a compelling destination. The proposal to make the Palace the headquarters of the country's cultural heritage institutions helped to ensure its future, giving it a transcendent use in the programmatic and symbolic, in the maximum use of its spaces, but also in the urban projec- tion that this meant. In this respect, not only was political support achieved but also overcoming the demanding state qualifications required for public investment. The definition of the use was also essential in the program´s definition and the consequent decisions of restoration. The client´s institution´s expertise in the field of heritage conservation and restoration offered an unbeatable oppor- tunity in conjunction with the MOP Directorate of Architec- ture to create a contemporary intervention methodology
