historia de la familia Gastón Figueroa nació el 29 de agosto de 1921 en la ciudad de Valdivia. En quinto año de humanidades sus padres se separaron lo que lo obligó a dejar sus estudios y trabajar. A raíz de esto comenzó con el negocio de las maderas y abrió una barraca en Santiago. Se casó con Eliana Séguy Arellano en 1947, y no tuvieron hijos. No fueron felices en su primera casa, él siempre paseaba frente al cerro San Luis y anhelaba tener una vivienda con vista a la ciudad. Luego de un tiempo juntó dinero y compró un sitio en ese lugar. El terreno tenía una pendiente que superaba los 45 grados por lo que hacer cualquier proyecto requería de una visión arquitectónica vanguardista. Su hermano, Hernán, era muy amigo del arquitecto Mario Recordón, y Figueroa estableció una gran amistad con él y, en espe- cial, con Alberto Sartori, su socio. Fue este último quien lo convenció de aceptar la propuesta arquitectónica de construir un gran pedestal sobre el cual posar la casa. La única condición que puso el matrimonio fue que esta fuera de un piso para no tener que subir escaleras en su vejez y poder disfrutar de la vista a la ciudad. Frente al encanto y al gran poder de convencimiento de Sartori comenzaron la construcción del proyecto de vida que querían. Al em- pezar la edificación se dieron cuenta de que el diseño era muy complejo ya que el pilar torre que sujetaría la casa era de un enorme peso por lo que el ingeniero calculista, Santiago Arias, junto con el constructor, Pablo Scagliotti, les comunicaron que las fundaciones debían ser de 11 metros de profundidad para poder soportar un sismo.
family history Gastón Figueroa was born on August 29, 1921 in the city of Valdivia. In his fifth year of humanities, his parents sepa- rated, which forced him to leave his studies and work. As a result, he started a business selling wood and opened a lumber mill in Santiago. He married Eliana Séguy Arellano in 1947, and they did not have any children. They were not happy in their first house, he always walked in front of San Luis Hill and longed to have a house with a view of the city. After a while, he saved money and bought a site there. The land had a slope that exceeded 45 degrees so any project to be done required an avant-garde architectural vision. His brother, Hernán, was a close friend of architect Mario Recordón, and Figueroa established a close friendship with him and especially with Alberto Sartori, his partner. It was the latter who convinced them to accept the architectural proposal to build a large base on which to place the house on. The only condition that the couple made was that it should be one floor so that they would not have to climb stairs in their old age and be able to enjoy the view of the city. In front of Sartori´s enchantment and great power of conviction, he began the construction of the life project they wanted. When they started to build they realized that the design was very complex since the column pillar that would support the house was extremely enormous heavy so the calculating engineer, Santiago Arias, together with the builder, Pablo Scagliotti, told them that the founda- tions had to be 11 meters deep to be able to withstand an earthquake.
