He began studying architecture at the University of Chile in 1953 and found the possibility of proposing and applying his knowledge of nature to workshop projects. His best teachers were Julio Mardones Restat -who was one of his motivators-, Edwin Wiel, León Prieto Casanova, Camilo Mori, and Roberto Dávila Carson. He graduated in 1959. After graduating, his first job was with Bruno Yaconi, and then with Roberto Müller and Osvaldo and Jaime Larraín. In this last office, he met engineer Santiago Arias and his friendship with him brought him closer to understanding structural systems. He became self-employed and worked with the Neut La- tour construction company. He later partnered with architect Gaston Saint-Jean who was involved with the improvement board in the city of Arica. This was a very fruitful period: his office was installed in the San Borja towers, they had two floors and had four architects and 18 draftsmen. Among the projects they developed, was the Pucará complex in Arica. At the beginning of 1960, after traveling for nine months through the United States and Central America, he decided to stay in Costa Rica to look for work. In 1961, he married Ana Clara Hirzel Fernández, whom he had met during his university years, and they had four children together, one of whom is an architect. He worked a few months in the Canary Islands with architect Kurt Conrad, who had developed the German Hospital project. When he returned, he decided to buy a lot from a German citizen who owned several pieces of land on the San Luis Hill. In exchange, he offered to act as a broker for the land and pay him as they were sold. His studies of the flora and insect structures have allowed him to engineer his own projects by applying the lessons of both the tree leaf and the tree itself. These observations led him to such a level of perfection that in his own house on San Luis Hill, the parking lot slab that is situated above the living room and dining room is six centimeters thick and has withstood the 1971, 1985, and 2010 earthquakes without any structural damage. Their marriage lasted 52 years until Ana Clara Hirzel died. Today, Juan Galleguillos is still working on developing real estate projects with great enthusiasm.
