Entrevista / Interview H

T

he son of famed Spanish architect Carlos Ferrater, Borja studied biol- ogy before realizing that he could not escape architecture. After graduating from the International University of Cataluña, in 2005, he started working in his father's office and within a few months, it had been 15 years since he and

his sister Lucia, his brother-in-law Xavier Martí-Galí and Carlos Ferrater formed OAB architects. During this period they have developed projects as diverse as airports, hospi- tals, museums, botanical gardens, restaurants, intermodal stations, and furniture, and their works have been built in countries such as France, Italy, Morocco, Turkey, Mexico or Brazil, to name a few. If OAB is known for anything, it is known for not having a defined seal, for their chameleon-like ability when it comes to design, and for excellence that has led them to receive different awards such as the Wallpaper Design Awards, Brunel Award, and the National Spanish Architecture Award. Although they leave behind all kinds of preconceived ideas when it comes to facing each project, there is a process that guides their work. "We are called the Office of Archi- tecture in Barcelona because we have a "know-how" that is from here. Although we create projects all over the world, we export the Barcelona school values, a certain way of conceiving public space, Mediterranean philosophy and our own tradition," says Borja. In July of this year, he participated in a talk on "Architects of the world and the crisis" with architect Tatiana Bilbao, organized by AOA and, coinciding with his father's 50th career anniversary as well as his office´s fifteenth anniver- sary, we wanted to learn more about the spirit behind OAB.
