Nuevo Mercado de Providencia Providencia´s New Market
Con el fin de recuperar el tradicional edificio que por 40 años funcionó como mercado de abastos, la Municipalidad de Providencia convocó a un concurso público al que se presentaron tres propuestas. El proyecto ganador, de Inversiones Las Arenas Ltda., contempla la recuperación del inmueble de 14mil metros cuadrados y la promesa de transformar el lugar en un atractivo turístico que revitalice la zona. With the purpose of recovering the traditional building that for 40 years had functioned as a market place, the Providencia Municipality called for a public competition and received three proposals. The winning project, by Inversiones Las Arenas Ltda., includes the recovery of the 14,000 square meter property and the promise of transforming the location into a tourist attraction that will revitalize the area.
Hace 30 años, en el edificio que hoy alberga las oficinas del Servicio Nacional de Turismo donde se juntan las dos Providencias, existía un mercado de abastecimiento rico en vida y cultura. Proyectado en 1947 por los arquitectos Carlos Cruz y Escipión Munizaga, se consolidó como un importante centro de abastecimiento y de encuentro ve- cinal. En 1985 el municipio entregó el inmueble a Sernatur, y y fue remodelado por el arquitecto Cristián Boza para adecuarlo al nuevo uso. En 2016 el edificio fue declarado Inmueble de Conser- vación Histórica y la Municipalidad de Providencia puso sus ojos en él con la idea de devolverle su antigua función de lugar de encuentro comunal. Durante 2018 tras varias gestiones, se llegó a un acuerdo con Sernatur, y la admi- nistración del edificio pasará a manos del municipio en un breve plazo que ambas partes fijaron. Con el fin de poner en valor la construcción y de recuperar y ampliar sus funciones originales para incluir locales de comida y espacios para la cultura, se llamó a un concurso público al que se presentaron tres propuestas. Un diverso jurado presidido por la alcaldesa Evelyn Matthei y compuesto por el arquitecto Yves Besançon en representación de la AOA, el actor Felipe Brown, el economista Carnio Corbo, la arquitecta Loreto Lyon representante del Colegio de Arquitectos, el empresario gastronómico Marcelo Cicali, el periodista Rodrigo Guenldenman y los concejales Iván Noguera y Jaime Parada estuvo a cargo de evaluar los proyectos. Las bases del concurso estipulaban que las pro- puestas arquitectónicas y urbanas serían consideradas por sobre las económicas dado el valor patrimonial del edificio.
Thirty years ago, in the building that to- day houses the offices of the National Tourism Service (Sernatur) where the two Providencia streets meet, there was a market place rich with life and culture. Designed in 1947 by architects Carlos Cruz and Escipión Munizaga, it
was established as an important supply center and neigh- borhood meeting place. In 1985, the municipality handed over the building to Sernatur, and architect Cristián Boza was in charge of remodeling and adapting it to its new use. In 2016, the building was declared a Historic Preservation Property, and the Providencia Municipality set its sights on returning it to its former purpose as a community meeting place. During 2018, after several negotiations, an agreement was reached with Sernatur and the administration of the building will be handed over to the municipality within a short period of time that both parties agreed on. In order to enhance the value of the building, recover, and expand its original functions to include food venues and spaces for culture, a public competition was called for in which three proposals were received. A diverse jury chaired by Mayor Evelyn Matthei and made up of architect Yves Besançon representing the AOA, actor Felipe Brown, econ- omist Carnio Corbo, architect Loreto Lyon representing the College of Architects, culinary entrepreneur Marcelo Cicali, journalist Rodrigo Guenldenman and council members’ Iván Noguera and Jaime Parada were in charge of evaluating the projects. El proyecto busca restaurar y recuperar la fachada original del edificio y llevar la entrada principal a su eje central. The project aims to restore and recover the building´s original facade and move the main entrance to its central axis.
