Tomas Mc Kay y Sebastián Rozas nos entregan en este artículo una mirada profunda y sugerente de nuestro rol como arquitectos en un mundo que aún modela su destino. Desde la choza de Epergos al laboratorio de biomateriales de Valdivia, revisamos a través de sus palabras nuestra indisociable relación con la historia y la materia. Como arquitectos cargamos una deuda histórica en términos medioambientales, una alerta frente al futuro. No es posible obviar que el sector de la construcción es responsable de, a lo menos, el 30 porciento del total de emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero 1 a nivel mundial y que en Chile, solo la construcción de edificios, representa la tercera parte de las emisiones de Co2 2 . Nos encontramos ante una situación excepcional de la vida social y política, donde por primera vez hemos conseguido una coordinación global frente a una amenaza común. Humanidad frente al espejo revisando sus temores, en la construcción de nuevas preguntas. Hay mucho por hacer y como la historia cuenta, los arquitectos tendremos un rol importante en esta nueva etapa. THE EVOLUTION OF ARCHITECTURE In this article, Tomas McKay and Sebastian Rozas give us a deep and suggestive look at our role as architects in a world that is still shaping its destiny. From the Epergos´ hut to the biomaterials laboratory in Valdivia, through their words, we review our inseparable relationship with history and matter. As architects, we carry a historical debt in environmental terms, an alert for the future. It cannot be ignored that the construction industry is responsible for at least 30 percent of total global greenhouse gas emissions 1 and that in Chile alone, the construction of buildings accounts for a third of Co2 emissions 2 . We are facing an exceptional situation in our social and political life, where for the first time we have achieved global coordination in the face of a common threat. Humanity is in front of the mirror confronting its fears, in the creation of new questions. There is much to do and as history tells us, architects will have an important role in this new era.

Pablo Riquelme es arquitecto de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile y magíster en Artes Visuales de la misma universidad. Es socio en la oficina Alvano y Riquelme Arquitectos donde desarrolla proyectos de diversa escala. Pablo Riquelme is an architect from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and has a master's degree in Visual Arts from the same university. He is partner in Alvano and Riquelme Arquitectos, where he develops projects of various scale.
