The remodeling and subsequent enhancement of this space has been divided into three stages. It is a process that began more than 39 years ago and has continued over time through different competitions awarded to Undurraga Devés. This has allowed the architects to reverse the accentuated deterioration and the evident hierarchical diminution of these urban voids, where large parking areas had displaced the actual presence of citizens. The first of the competitions took place in 1980. On that occasion, Undurraga Devés proposed a combination of two types of plazas: the first, a hard, triangular plaza, faced the Government Palace, while the other, in the form of a park, sur- rounded the first, incorporating a green space in the middle of historic downtown. In 1995 and 2002, two new competitions were held to remodel the southern void of the palace, within the framework of the country's Bicentennial Independence celebrations. The result of these competitions allowed Undurraga Devés to complete the design of Santiago's Barrio Cívico. The original project considered a new urban density that will allow, in the future, vehicle crossing and public transpor- tation under the Plaza. The proposal, which is still pending, will provide the city with a monumental urban space dedicated to a public promenade. This project, partially built between 2005 and 2010, involves recomposing the fragmented ground, creating a continuous level and thus underlining the unity suggested by the sur- rounding buildings. First, a large terrace was proposed adjacent to the Palacio de la Moneda, extending the government building's interior courtyards into the public space under which the Palacio de la Moneda Cultural Center was built. From this new plan starts,
