democratic coexistence. That is why, within the framework of this commemoration, the State has emphasized reparation measures for the victims, which allow us to advance in the guarantees of non-repetition. In September, the memorial to the 38 members of the Group of the President's Friends (GAP) was inaugurated in front of the door of Morandé 80, a tribute to those who were in the palace at the time of the bombing and who were executed or are still missing. In addition, a plaque was installed at the memorial site of Barracks No. 1 of the Car- abineros Intelligence Service (SICAR), located under the Plaza de la Constitución. The barracks, known as "El Hoyo", were operational between 1973 and 1974, and it is estimated that about thirty people, especially militants of the Socialist Party, were detained and tortured in its facilities. The horror that is embodied in the La Moneda Palace can also be felt in the different sites of remembrance in every corner of the country. With that pain, but also with the hope of democratic reconstruction, we fulfill the commitment we made as a State to protect at least one Site of Remembrance in each region as a Historic Monument, in order to achieve its preservation as a way of contributing to the protection, promotion and education of human rights. When confronted with the history and symbolic significance of this building, which can be considered Chile's most important monument, it is inevitable to link it to our own life trajectory. As Marta Cruz-Coke, creator of Heritage Day and the first director of the National Library and the Directorate of Archives, Libraries and Museums (now the National Cultural Heritage Service), said, heritage is that which continues to have meaning. What, then, does the La Moneda Palace mean to the inhabitants of Chile? How is this meaning updated? These questions invite us to reflect on the tensions that inhabit this building and those that are present in other monuments that have witnessed the recent history of our country. The challenge of a monument with the significance of the La Moneda Palace is that its entire historical cycle, its en- tire republican history, of horror and the return to democracy, teaches us that the problems of democracy are always solved with more democracy. !

Fifty years after the coup d'état, we are called upon to take charge of the history of the La Moneda Palace, which has given it its symbolic heritage value and which is intertwined with its monumental character.
