Antofagasta region. Without an adequate survey of this heritage, we are limited in understanding and building the history and memory of both the Antofagasta region and our country. The spaces, elements, and events associated with the railroad's passage, configure and define a very particular geographic area that contains a high cultural and patrimonial value that presents a great opportunity for development and impor- tant resources. Areas and regions that possess historical and cultural heritage become potential tourist attrac- tions. Possessing a rich and diverse cultural he- ritage is a source of attraction for a large number of people for the country and for the region where it is located. FCAB, throughout its history, has been large- ly responsible for the construction of a cultural landscape that, today, treasures and possesses a rich tangible and intangible heritage, which can be enhanced and, in turn, attract visitors as a cultural and tourist attraction for the city and the region. The definition made by Joaquín Sabaté in the first statement of this presentation serves as a framework of action and reference, from which we can affirm that the entire FCAB railway network that crosses through the territory and that forms a good number of settlements in the region of An- tofagasta is, without a doubt, a cultural landscape. This approach implies understanding that every valuable space of heritage throughout the territory is a cultural landscape aimed at preserving its railway heritage resources. At the same time, the

CULTURAL LANDSCAPE AND ENHANCEMENT OF RAILWAY HERITAGE

"Cultural Landscape is a geographical area associated with an event, an activity, or a histori- cal character, containing aesthetic and cultural values. To put it in a less orthodox, but simpler and more beautiful way, the cultural landscape is the trace that a certain activity, over the years, leaves on the territory, something like a memorial to the unknown worker". "Cultural Landscapes and Heritage Parks play an increasingly important role in territorial development. They are communicative spaces, which treasure and transmit information, they are places where stories and messages are linked to spaces and forms".

DFROM THE PRESERVATION OF HERITAGE TO THE PRESERVATION OF LANDSCAPE, JOAQUÍN SABATÉ BEL

The 'FCAB Rail Yards Conversion Project' marks the beginning of a heritage management process whose purpose is to highlight and describe the fundamental ideas and guidelines that should foster the administration of the heritage resour- ces that make up FCAB's material legacy in the
