Patio Antofagasta
FCAB's Railway Yard Reconversion Plan Network of Public Spaces. The "Plan for the reconversion of railway yards", from another dimension, is the way to integrate and connect key points of the city that, with the natural evolution of the city, have been discon- nected. This involves, on the one hand, a purely technical issue and, on the other, a phenomenolo- gical situation, since street urbanization is, at the same time, the creation of spaces that facilitate encounters between neighborhood residents who for years have been disconnected, isolated and, many times, segregated. To complete the city's unfinished plan, a product of its urban evolution, is, in a certain way, to contribute to the sequence of the neighbors' routines, their journeys, and the new situations that can be created. The new streets, as well as the parks and public spaces, are open to the possibilities of everyday uses, places that can be understood from the logic of Antofagasta's own routines. In the words of Humberto Gianinni, the new spaces will be trans- formed into the subsoil of everyday life. "What is most accessible and common, what is closest at hand (communicative, par excellence), we said, is the street: the street through which we usually walk on our way to or from our routine activities, and which has been opened at some point in the history of a city or a village, in order to
and the area to be regenerated and urbanized is 8.81 hectares. The most important urban operation in this sector of the city is the integration, through the opening and urbanization of all public spaces, of FCAB's heritage buildings, which represent diffe- rent architectural types associated with housing, warehouses, and infrastructure to support railway activity, such as stations and stops. These constitute a varied group of architec- tural pieces with a characteristic materiality and construction system, aesthetic value, and design typologies associated with the local climate, ex- pressed in corridors, verandas, eaves, and other environmental conditioning elements. The incorporation of this railyard into the city will contribute relevant historical pieces to the itinerary created by the new public spaces. Its route will be a function of making all the attributes that define the historical and patrimonial value present in this courtyard visible and bringing them closer. These spaces will reveal the railway character defined by the development and evolution of 135 years of history in the city.
