Charlotte (NC) Alumni Supports Guide Right Through Annual 5K

I n the summer of 2012, a meeting of the minds took place between the Kappa Foundation of Charlotte and the Charlotte (NC) Alumni Chapter. The goal for the meeting was to brainstorm and construct a signature fundraising initiative to fund our Guide Right programs while also being engaged in the community of Charlotte. The meeting birthed the Healthy Achieve- ment 5K Run|Walk, a fundraiser event focused on the promotion of healthy lifestyles for men in the Charlotte community, held during Father’s Day weekend. After the inaugural event, the HA5K quickly expanded to encompass even more of Charlotte and the sur- rounding community, resulting in one of the largest 5K races in the southeastern United States. By Randy Hill

After five years of hosting the event, the HA5K has grown from the initial 175 participants in year 1 to approxi- mately 750 participants in June 2018. The participants have ranged from as young as six years old to our eldest run- ners in their 80’s. The HA5K now offers a virtual run option for its participants to be active in the race from anywhere in the world. In addition to the walk/run compo- nent of the HA5K, the Charlotte (NC) Alumni Chapter has partnered with the National Kidney Foundation, Ameri- can Heart Association, and American Cancer Society to bring awareness to specific health and wellness issues that affect our community by providing the event with a health fair at the end of the race. The health fair features included

health screenings, activity booths from the various organization, and informa- tional packets for the participants to take home.
