KAPPA PHILANTHROPY

T he residents of Houston and the entire Texas gulf coast area, from Beaumont to Corpus Christi, were besieged by Hurricane Harvey. Not only were they hit hard by Hurri- cane Harvey but also the record flooding that followed and the resulting destruc- tion and disruption to their lives is still hard to fully comprehend. Kappa Alpha Psi ® did its level best to answer the call at all levels of the fraternity. The fraternity, under the leadership of

Grand Polemarch Thomas L. Battles, Jr., hosted calls with senior leadership, high ranking officials from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which frequently updated the leadership with more than a dozen brief- ings. The Houston (TX) Alumni Chapter figured prominently in all of the logistics and planning to assist affected residents. Surrounding Alumni Chapters who

couldn't help families physically, such as the Missouri City-Sugarland (MS) Alumni Chapter assisted immediately in creative ways. For example, the chapter held a “Fish Fry with the Nupes” social event to raise money for relief efforts. With more than 200 people supporting the event the chapter was able to quickly raise several thousand dollars to provide housing assistance for those displaced by the storm.
