industries, and in the design of the first shopping mall in Montevideo, and that Dieste designed together with architects. Enrique Cohe and Gomez Platero. It is located in the Buceo neighborhood next to the World Trade Center, few know that Shopping Montevideo (1984) was designed by Eladio Dieste. Its undulating structure made of bricks and gaussian vaults is barely visible today from the service yard and parking lots. Aware of the aggressiveness of the business activity, he invited people to know and study the structure before it was occupied as a shopping center. In fact, today it is practically impossible to recognize the brick masonry work because it is saturated with advertising and billboards that are attached to the architecture. In quantitative terms, his most outstanding work is in industrial ar- chitecture, where he made his brick structures compete in price with concrete and metal ones. He did this in Uruguay as well as in Argentina and Brazil, countries that have a long tradition of industrial develop- ment. An example of his vast industrial work on large surfaces is the TEM Factory (1960-1962) on the way to Carrasco with its large double curvature vaults made of reinforced hollow bricks whose structure spans large distances while avoiding buckling and possible bending. Between one vault and the other, there are skylights that allow better distribution of natural light and contribute to enhance the generous spatiality, and highlight the unparalleled shapes created by Dieste. It is said that he volunteered to be the first to enter the site first before removing the formwork to assure his workers that it was well calculated. His industrial
works, spread throughout Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina, exceed one hundred. In his long list of in- dustrial projects, it is necessary to add the CADYL Silo in Young and the Fagar bottling plant in Colonia in the Rio Negro province. His family home was completed in 1962 and is located on the Punta Gorda peninsula in Montevideo. It is a low-density residential neigh- borhood, heavily wooded and with
