The synthesis of these three variables is the i cebergs- cape: a concept that encompasses disciplines such as ecology and landscape architecture and represents a hybrid between the traditional landscape and waterscape. The iceberg itself is a sublime landscape and a symbol of climate change and phenomena taking place on the Antarctic continent. They play a key ecological role as an ecosystemic hotspot attracting a high concentration of fauna in their environment. In the light of the imagery analysis of tourists in Antarctica, the iceberg may be an element that encompasses several of the expectations related to this continent. For the definition of i cebergscape, different scales of approach were examined. The continental scale was fun- damental to understand what are the critical areas related to climate change and to detect the main phenomena of melting and detachment of icebergs in the Antarctic Pen- insula, a place with the highest concentration of tourist and scientific population on the continent. In this peninsula, the James Ross Archipelago was chosen as a case study because of the presence of a high number of glaciers and icebergs, and because of the high variability in the amount of sea ice around it and, at the same time, attempts were made to monitor its changes and transformations through satellite images. By working on the glacier and iceberg scales, it was pos- sible to formulate the concept of i cebergscape , simultane- ously analyzing the iceberg as a unit and as a fragment of a more complex system. We studied the process of formation and life of these blocks of frozen water, their classification, and their value as an ecosystemic hotspot, that is, their capacity to create a food chain thanks to the progressive dissolution of nutrients trapped in the ice, which contains
península, fue elegido el archipiélago de James Ross como caso de estudio por la presencia de un alto número de gla- ciares e icebergs, y por la alta variabilidad en la extensión del hielo marino a su alrededor y, a su vez, se intentaron monitorizar sus cambios y transformaciones a través de imágenes satelitales. Al trabajar las escalas del glaciar y del iceberg fue posible formular el concepto de icebergscape, analizando simultá- neamente al iceberg como unidad y como fragmento de un sistema más complejo. Se estudió el proceso de formación y vida de estos bloques de agua congelada, su clasificación, y su valor como hotspot ecosistémico, es decir, su capacidad de generar una cadena alimentaria gracias a la progresiva disolución de nutrientes atrapados en el hielo que concentra en su entorno casi la totalidad del ecosistema antártico. El análisis del iceberg se puede extrapolar a un sistema más complejo a escala territorial, adaptando diferentes teorías de la ecología del paisaje, incluida la biogeografía insular. Esto proporciona una clave de lectura del lugar que permite asociar diferentes escalas territoriales y tempo- rales. Un icebergscape es un tipo de paisaje único, que se constituye al mismo tiempo por elementos comunes al landscape (glaciar) y al seascape (corrientes marinas), que puede interpretarse en su complejidad mediante la aplicación complementaria de un modelo mosaico (icebergs como fragmentos de parches y escalones) y gradiente (intensidad del hotspot ecosistémico). Tras definir el icebergscape desde un punto de vista teó- rico, se realizó una intervención de arquitectura del paisaje para permitir su aproximación y visualización, a través de la interpretación en el sentido de “parque iceberg”, figura capaz de permitir una relación directa entre el ser humano y el paisaje.
