El Centro Cooperativista Uru- guayo es una institución que, desde 1961, asesoraba y pro- movía emprendimientos coo- perativos en diversos sectores, y en 1965 creó un “Sector Vi- vienda” que se concentró en el desarrollo de tres experiencias “piloto” en el interior del país, mediante el sistema de ayuda mutua. Si bien en sus inicios contó con un equipo pequeño de arquitectos –con Mario Spallanzani como proyectista principal–, pronto amplió su lista de técnicos, de la cual participó activamente una generación de arquitectos jóve- nes formados en las décadas del cincuenta y sesenta en la Facultad de Arquitectura de la Universidad de la República, y cuyo rol fue fundamental, tanto en el debate académico como en el intenso trabajo de proyecto de grandes conjuntos habitacionales. The Uruguayan Cooperative Center is an institution that, since 1961, has been advising and promoting cooperative ventures in various sectors and in 1965 created a “Hous- ing Sector” that focused on the development of three “pilot” experiences in the country´s interior, through the mutual aid system. Although at the beginning it had a small team of ar- chitects - with Mario Spallanzani as the main designer -, it soon expanded its list of specialists, with the active participation of a generation of young architects trained in the fifties and sixties at the School of Architecture at the University of the Republic, and whose role was fundamental both in the academic debate and the intense project work of large housing complexes. The Uruguayan Cooperative Center turned out to be a kind of architectural laboratory, both at the level of ideas and in the technical-constructive dimension of the profession. ccu, a Laboratory for Action
