In the Mataquito Theater, a project to be built in Licantén, Irarrázaval used the agricultural construction heritage of the area as a reference: the silos, the water ponds, and the supporting structures in the vineyards, to reinterpret them in the building. "Translation creates bridges with other times, with different cultures and with the community. For this theater, I sought to work with local materials, with the way of building and with everyday elements recognizable by the community, and I translated them in order to bring the project closer to the people," he says. The theater is a building made up of three large bodies, externally tied together by a canopy that unifies the proj- ect. Designed entirely in wood, the constructive solutions and their repetitions are transformed into an architectural language that seeks to highlight the value of this material. Repetition is another key aspect of the architect's work. Irarrázaval understands this concept as a way of providing structures with coherence, order, and perceptive simplic- ity. "Repetition is a resource that has always been used, the Greeks used it in their structures, it is applied in art, in music... There is a feeling of pleasure associated with anticipating what is going to happen, and when what is expected happens, it generates enjoyment. Our brain is designed to recognize patterns, so repetition provides an experience of security. That same principle can be applied to architecture. I am interested in delivering a way of living that focuses more on fulfilling expectations than on sur- prises," he explains.
En el caso del teatro de Mataquito, proyecto que se construirá en Licantén, Irarrázaval tomó como referencia el patrimonio de construcciones agrícolas del lugar: los silos, los estanques de agua y las estructuras soportantes de las viñas, para reinterpretarlos en el edificio. “La traducción crea puentes con otros tiempos, con diferentes culturas y con la comunidad. Para este teatro busqué trabajar con los materiales propios de la localidad, con la forma de construir y con elementos cotidianos reconocibles para la comunidad, y los traduje con el fin de acercar el proyecto a la gente”, dice. El teatro es un edificio conformado por tres grandes cuerpos, amarrados exteriormente por una marquesina que unifica el proyecto. Diseñado íntegramente en madera, las soluciones constructivas y las repeticiones de estas se transforman en el lenguaje arquitectónico con el cual se busca poner en valor este material. Y es que la repetición es otro de los aspectos claves en la obra del arquitecto. Irarrázaval entiende este concepto como una manera de dotar a las construcciones de coherencia, orden y simpleza perceptiva. “La repetición es un recurso que se ha usado siempre, los griegos lo utilizaban en sus construcciones, se aplica en el arte, en la música… Hay una sensación de placer asociada al hecho de anticiparse a lo que va a pasar, y cuando lo esperado sucede, genera goce. Nuestro cerebro está hecho para reconocer patrones, por lo que la repetición entrega una experiencia de seguridad. Ese mismo principio se puede llevara a la arquitectura. A mí me interesa entregar una manera de vivir que se centra más en el cumplimiento de las expectativas que en la sorpresa”, explica.
