This resource was used to design the pavilion that was placed on the esplanade of the central courtyard of the Lo Contador campus and later in Valparaíso for the celebration of the 120th anniversary of Universidad Católica de Chile's School of Architecture. One of the requirements of the commission was that it should be disassemblable and movable. Irarrázaval based his design on an inexpensive, lightweight, folding, wooden beach chair, and designed a five-meter-high module, which he repeated 36 times to create a circular space. As a cover for the pavilion, he designed an inflatable 12-meter diameter sphere that gives weight and hierarchy to the structure. "When measurements are repeated there is a design and perceptual economy. If you simplify the form, the emphasis can be on the material and the construction system. I believe that experiencing places has to do with understanding, and understanding space makes the experience of living more intense and profound," he says. Este recurso fue el que utilizó para diseñar el pabellón que se emplazó en la explanada del patio central del campus Lo Contador y luego en Valparaíso, con motivo de la celebración de los 120 años de la Facultad de Arquitectura de la Universidad Católica de Chile. Uno de los requisitos del encargo era que fuese desarmable y trasladable. Irarrázaval se basó en una silla de playa, artefacto plegable, de madera, económico y liviano, y diseñó un módulo de cinco metros de altura, que repitió 36 veces para armar un espacio circular. Como cubierta del pabellón diseñó una esfera inflable de 12 metros de diámetro, que otorga peso y jerarquía a la estructura. Este pabellón fue el punto de partida para explorar el tema de los módulos de madera repetibles que luego usaría en el teatro de Mataquito y en la biblioteca de Constitución. “Cuando las medidas se repiten, se produce una economía del diseño y una economía perceptiva. Si simplificas la forma, el énfasis puede caer en la materia y en el sistema constructivo. Creo que la experiencia de los lugares tiene que ver con la comprensión y, el hecho de entender el espacio, hace que el habitar sea más intenso y profundo”, argumenta.
