The idea was to build the Explora hotel in the town. Eventually, it became clear to me that a 20-room hotel would double the size of San Pedro, and that the way to maintain tradition was not to enlarge the town but to found a new place in another ayllu. With this in mind, we were interested in Larache, the relatively highest ayllu in the oasis, with 360-degree views that include Licancabur and other volcanoes, and where gentiles (ancient people) once lived. We wanted to buy about 17 hectares - that is, about 17 plots of land - to establish a site on which to build the hotel (the oasis is 1,700 hectares). The day I visited one of the first farms with its owner, I asked him for a tape measure to make a sketch. He looked at me with pity and said "why do you want a tape measure, the tape measure is very inaccurate! Look at the house with its cactus wood doors, the vines, the vegetable garden, the orchard, the pears, the chañares of the fence, the walls, the alfalfa fields to raise sheep, the water from the irrigation ditches, the corrals..." The Atacameño peoples, as well as other indigenous peoples, have a different sense of land ownership than we do, and that inspired us to buy 17 farms and keep them separated from each other, just as they were, to preserve their rich history that is reflected in their differences, dismissing the original temptation to form a single piece of land with them, as we would do in a city.

The hotel rooms follow a typical typology of the structures in the area.
