The fiscals were the ones who supported the imple- mentation of the Catholic religion in each territory, so they were undoubtedly the axis of evangelization in Chiloé, a role that continues until today. Their main duties were to know the doctrine, direct the weekly religious activities in each chapel, provisionally baptize, deliver spiritual help, teach catechism, and report to the parish priest on mission days. Over the years, and given the needs, other roles ap- peared, such as the sotafiscales, who helped the fiscal, or the supremos, who were initially in charge of the chapels and sacred images material care. As a result, there was a supreme for each image, who also played an important role in local festivities. In light of this autonomous organizational system, for the community associated with each location, the tem- ple´s construction had a fundamental value, therefore the financing, design, and construction were actions in which they participated actively, either by donating wood or labor. This explains the innumerable representations that can be established based on these wooden buildings, which in most of the towns have also shaped their urban configuration, being an element of the greatest hierarchy and preeminence in the surrounding area.
Los fiscales eran quienes sostenían la implementación de la religión católica en cada uno de los territorios, por lo que, sin duda, fueron el eje de la evangelización en Chiloé, rasgo que se mantiene hasta la actualidad. Sus principales funciones eran conocer la doctrina, dirigir las actividades religiosas semanales en cada una de las capillas, bautizar provisionalmente, entregar auxilios espirituales, enseñar el catecismo y dar cuenta al párroco en los días de misión. Con el transcurso de los años, y en vista de las nece- sidades, fueron apareciendo otros roles como los sotafis- cales, quienes ayudaban al fiscal; o los supremos, quienes inicialmente estaban encargados del cuidado material de las capillas e imágenes sagradas. Lo anterior derivó en que hubiera un supremo por cada imagen el que, además, cumplía un importante rol en las festividades locales. En vista de este sistema organizacional tan autónomo, para la comunidad asociada a cada localidad, la construc- ción del templo tenía un valor fundamental, por tanto el financiamiento, diseño y construcción eran acciones en las que participaban activamente, ya sea por medio de donación de maderas o mano de obra. Lo anterior explica las innumerables representaciones que se pueden establecer a partir de estos edificios de madera, que en la mayoría de los poblados, además, ha determinado su configuración urbana, siendo el elemento de mayor jerarquía y preeminencia en el paisaje.
