ste artículo pretende dilucidar el rol de la Plaza Baquedano al punto de configurarse como un nodo, un barrio, un borde (socioeconómico) y, también, un hito urbano. No existe otro punto de Santiago que tenga estas características y cuya imagen rememore tantos episodios distintos, desde conflictos y tensiones, hasta alegrías y celebraciones. El ser un sector de la ciudad donde el país completo puede verse reflejado para unirse o dividirse, es algo que pocos espacios urbanos pueden lograr, y eso hace tan fascinante su investigación. En esta exploración ocupo los trabajos de mi tesis de magíster de Asentamientos Humanos y Medioambiente, donde exploré el origen del barrio alto, a partir de una serie de operaciones que transcurrieron en la plaza, su entorno y áreas cercanas. Esto lleva a la pregunta de cómo el diseño y la arquitectura pueden mediar en las distintas posturas, fuerzas y visiones que surgen del estallido social y que tienen a la Plaza Baquedano transformada en un territorio de disputa y apropiación política y cultural. ¿Es posible reducir esta tensión mediante el diseño? ¿Qué estrategias deben aplicarse para ello? ¿Qué podemos aprender de los distintos momentos que ha vivido este lugar tan relevante en la historia moderna de Santiago? Esas interrogantes busco despejar, desde la mirada de la arquitectura urbana, entendiendo que esta disciplina, como todas, no puede estar ausente de las fuerzas que orbitan entorno a Baquedano. E
his article seeks to elucidate Plaza Baquedano´s role to the point that it becomes a node, a neighborhood, a (socioeconomic) fringe, and also an urban landmark. There is no other point in Santiago that has these characteristics and whose image reminds us of so many different episodes, from conflicts and tensions to happiness and celebrations. Being a sector of the city where the whole country can be reflected in unity or division, is something that few urban spaces can achieve, and that makes it such fascinating research. In this exploration, I use my master's thesis on human settlements and environment work, where I explored the origin of the upscale neighborhood, from a series of operations that took place in the plaza, its surroundings, and nearby areas. This leads to the question of how design and architecture can act in different stances, forces, and visions that have arisen from the social unrest and that have transformed Plaza Baquedano into an area of political and cultural dispute and appropriation. Is it possible to reduce this tension through design? What strategies should be implemented to do it? What can we learn from the different moments that this place, so relevant in Santiago´s modern history, has experienced? I intend to clarify these questions, from an urban architecture point of view, understanding that this discipline, like all others, cannot be absent from the forces that orbit around Baquedano.
