Ideas y reflexiones futuras Visto en retrospectiva, ninguno de los diseños de esta plaza pensada por Vicuña Mackenna dio cuenta de su condición de frontera socioeconómica primero y de grieta social después. La plaza fue un atrio de estación, centro de transformación, rotonda vial y luego óvalo de paso y, en cada celebración, esta forma física fue sobrepasada por las personas, especialmente luego de que la apertura del Metro de la Línea 1 consolida su función vial por sobre su condición de plaza. El paso por sobre el estar. El auto por sobre el peatón. La conexión por sobre la pausa. Acertadamente el concurso de ideas Nueva Alameda Providencia propuso rediseñar este nudo para materializar esta doble condición de manifestación y nodo vial metropolitano y el proyecto ganador, logró plasmarlo con un diseño que permite esta dualidad al crear un pavimento continuo entre calzada y acera, que pueda ser calle, pero también explanada de manifestaciones. Un diseño neutro que hace que Baquedano quede flotando al igual que el Genio de la Libertad. Visto en retrospectiva es una decisión muy acertada, pero el estallido la deja incompleta por que nos recuerda, con la fuerza de los hechos, la grieta que se dibuja en este territorio, que vuelve a ser frontera de un país más dividido que nuevamente tiene este lugar como epicentro. Hoy el monumento a Baquedano fue retirado para protegerlo de las manifestaciones y su plinto luce solo y blindado, reforzando la grieta. El desafío entonces, es repararla y la pregunta es cómo se hace algo así con el diseño, siendo tanta la complejidad que implica. Es claro que la calle no basta para unir y creo que la explanada tampoco, ya que sigue dejando a Baquedano como foco y centro, y como espacio de pugna y conflicto. ¿Podría ser posible volver a poner el genio de la libertad en este punto? Pienso que no, ya que plaza Italia tiene, inevitablemente asociada, la condición de frontera social aguas arriba y aguas abajo. Por lo tanto, creo que la primera piedra para sanar la grieta que simboliza hoy la plaza, es un nuevo monumento que, por su diseño, altura, envergadura y posición de cuenta del espíritu de unión que el país demanda y que los arquitectos debemos ayudar a materializar. Quizás no con diseños específicos, como ha ocurrido hasta ahora, sino que, con la ubicación del monumento de la unión, su altura, envergadura. Y si somos fieles a la historia que he relatado en este artículo, también por el espacio que resulta de las obras que se ejecutan en otros sectores de Santiago. Este envolvente metropolitano que antes fue Chuchunco, el matadero y La Chimba. Hoy tenemos que redefinir estos puntos como las seis plazas de Vicuña Mackenna en otros lugares que también simbolizan la grieta que queremos recomponer, en espacios que simbolicen la inclusión, la paz social, la justicia y que honren la memoria. Escoger estos lugares y diseñarlos es tan relevante como repensar Baquedano. Es esa la escala con que se debe abordar este desafío. /
Future ideas and reflections In hindsight, none of the designs of this plaza conceived by Vicuña Mackenna accounted for its status as a socioeconomic frontier first and a social breach later. The plaza was a station atrium, transformation center, roundabout, and then an oval passage, in each celebration, this physical form was surpassed by people, especially after the opening of Metro Line 1 consolidated its street over its plaza status. Passing through it is more important than staying. The car over the pedestrian. The connection over the pause. The Nueva Alameda Providencia ideas competition rightly proposed redesigning this junction to materialize this dual function of demonstration and metropolitan node and the winning project managed to capture it with a design that allows this duality by creating a continuous pavement between roadway and sidewalk, which can be a street, but also a demonstration esplanade. A neutral design that makes Baquedano float like the Genius of Liberty. In retrospect, it is a very wise decision, but the social unrest leaves it incomplete because it reminds us of the facts, the breach that is drawn in this place, which is once again the border of a more divided country that has this place as its epicenter. Today, Baquedano´s monument was removed to protect it from the demonstrations and its plinth looks lonely and shielded, reinforcing the breach. The challenge, then, is to repair it and the question is how to do something like this with the design, given the complexity involved. It is clear that the street is not enough to unite, and I believe that the esplanade is not enough either, as it continues to leave Baquedano as the focus and center, and as a space of struggle and conflict. Could it be possible to bring the genius of freedom back to this place? I do not think so, since Plaza Italia has inevitably associated with it, the status of upstream and downstream social border. Therefore, I believe that the first stone to heal the breach that symbolizes the plaza today is a new monument that, through its design, height, size, and position, reflects the spirit of unity that the country demands and that we architects must help to materialize. Perhaps not with specific designs, as has happened so far, but with the monument of the union location, its height, magnitude. If we are faithful to the history that I have narrated in this article, also because of the space resulting from the works being performed in other Santiago sectors. This metropolitan surrounding used to be Chuchunco, the slaughterhouse, and La Chimba. Today we have to redefine these points as the six plazas of Vicuña Mackenna in other places that also symbolize the breach that we want to recompose, in spaces that symbolize inclusion, social peace, justice, and honor memory. Choosing these places and designing them is as relevant as rethinking Baquedano. This is the scale with which this challenge must be approached. /
