A BEHIND-THE-SCENES LOOK AT THE 1-Week Smile Makeover

In the early to mid-2000s, I was appearing on a lot of makeover and talk shows. The challenge with any television show is the timeline. We had a limited time to transform a person’s smile for the big reveal at the end. This was a challenge I gave a lot of thought to. How can I quickly improve someone’s smile without compromising quality? To start, I had to develop new techniques to speed up the work. This required changing the some of the equipment I had in the office and upgrading it to more advanced technology that allowed for quicker work to be done — again, without jeopardizing quality. I also looked at the materials I was using. I brought in materials that were fast- setting and would cut down on the time the patient was in the chair. As I was developing this quicker approach to dental treatment, more materials were becoming available that met my standards. A patient could expect a new, healthy smile with little to no compromise. Another aspect of the treatment process I upgraded was the anesthetic. I looked into an anesthetic that had been on the market in Europe for the past 30 years but was still new in the U.S. While many dental and medical practices in America had yet to start using this anesthetic, I saw potential. It allows the patient to stay numb for a longer period of time, allowing me to do more work in fewer sessions. On top of that, it was safe. As part of the process, I also turned to our master lab technicians. We work with highly-skilled technicians who do exclusive work for our patients. This went beyond having a lab tech in office to having a dedicated team outside of the office. This is a team with access to all the equipment they need in order to do the high-quality work our patients and I expect. They are incredibly talented — true artists in the field of dentistry. It’s through this talent that we get exceptional results within a limited time frame. When you bring all of these things together, the end result is the 1-Week Smile Makeover. It was a challenge worth overcoming, and it’s a testament to the work of a lot of people, as well as the many advances in the dental field.

Since developing the 1-Week Smile Makeover, it has been a tremendous success. After 12 years, its track record speaks for itself.

The 1-Week Smile Makeover also has broad appeal. Nearly half of my patients come from out of town. Being able to complete treatment within a week or two — and often less than a week — is very attractive to a lot of people. Often, dental work is considered time-consuming and people will put it off, even if they are unhappy with their smile. The 1-Week Smile Makeover changes that perspective. It changes what dentistry can be.

SAFE AND SWEET Allergy-Friendly Valentines for Your Child’s Classmates

For a parent of a child with allergies, every day can feel like a battle with food labels and ingredients lists — and Valentine’s Day only exacerbates this fear. Avoid the danger of an allergic reaction on Valentine’s Day by creating alternative, candy-free valentines that the whole class will enjoy! Get Creative This valentine idea taps into your kids’ desire to create by using commonly found household items. Have your children draw pictures, create cards, mold tiny sculptures, or braid together friendship bracelets to create one- of-a-kind gifts that will be safe for their classmates to enjoy. Kids can put their own effort into gift-giving, and their valentines will have a personal touch candy cannot replicate. Think Like a Kid If you’re looking for a creative valentine that will be safe for all your child’s friends to play with, check no further than the toy aisle of your local dollar store. While being mindful of latex allergies, you can purchase little toys that kids will love that won’t break your bank. Think bouncy balls, mini skateboards, Army men, yo-yos, puzzles, rubber ducks, hand-held BEFORE AFTER &

games, markers, or bubbles. Adorn these little gifts with yarn, ribbons, or personalized tags, and slap on cute sayings to make them fit for the holiday. Finish off the masterpiece by having your kiddo sign their name on each valentine, and you’ve got a kid-approved Valentine’s Day favorite. Fancy Up Some Fruit If you’re worried about food allergies but still want to make a yummy treat, ask your child’s teacher for a list of students’ allergies, then just work around them. Fruits are usually a safe bet, but it’s best to double check. You could skewer strawberries and heart-shaped pieces of watermelon onto kabob sticks for a sweet and fun snack, or pass out goody bags with apples, bananas, and clementines. Offering a group snack that is allergy-friendly will keep your children and their friends safe and healthy, and it can also help children with allergies feel included in the festivities. As with all Valentine’s Day gifts, keep in mind that it’s not the item or money spent that means the most. It’s the thought behind each gift that makes receiving valentines the sweetest part.

What You Need to Know About Teeth Grinding The Nightly Grind

Do you often wake up feeling tired, with a headache, or with tension in your jaw, neck, or shoulders? If so, the problem may be in the way you sleep.

Teeth grinding places significant pressure on your teeth and jaw muscles. When you wake up, you may not feel rested, and the pressure can lead to headaches and tension throughout the head, neck, and shoulders. Worse, bruxism can cause serious damage to your teeth. Treatment for bruxism varies from person to person. For some, all they need is a custom-fitted mouthguard. Others may need to change their sleep positioning. Others still may need to register for a sleep study to determine whether or not they have sleep apnea and get the proper treatment. Additionally, reducing day-to-day stressors can go a long way toward improving the quality of your sleep. In any case, if you have any symptoms of teeth grinding, such as tooth wear, fractures, or increased sensitivity, be sure to discuss it with your dentist, who will help you determine your best next step.

As you sleep, the muscles in your face, jaw, and neck relax — or at least, they should. In one study published in the Journal of Orofacial Pain, doctors estimated that upward of 30 percent of the population experiences bruxism, or teeth grinding. Bruxism is a form of tension. As you sleep, muscles in your jaw, neck, and head tighten, and your tongue presses forward against the back of your teeth. The jaw clenches shut, forcing the upper and lower teeth to come into contact. The result is teeth grinding. The exact cause of bruxism isn’t entirely understood, but it is often associated with stress or anxiety. Because it primarily occurs during sleep (though it can occur when you’re awake), some theories suggest bruxism is related to poor sleep — that is, sleep disrupted by airway constriction (sleep apnea) or improper body positioning.

Into the Arctic Circle Adventure in Swedish Lapland

If you’re eager for a new adventure in 2019, you’ll surely find it in Swedish Lapland. With trail systems that take you into the Arctic Circle, the northernmost region of Sweden is home to national parks, glaciers, reindeer, the beguiling midnight sun, and spectacular night skies. Though winters are cold, one benefit of traveling to the region in this season is to catch a glimpse of the night sky. The northern lights are visible from a few remote locations like Abisko National Park, one of the first established national parks in Sweden. Traveling to Abisko is an adventure in and of itself. From Stockholm, the fastest option is to take one of only two airlines that fly into Kiruna, then travel by train to Abisko. Despite the challenge

of getting there, adventure-seeking visitors from around the world arrive each winter to experience the Arctic beauty. Winter attractions include ice skating, snowshoeing, and the Scandinavian sauna (this last one is a must any time of the year). Befriend a Scandinavian and youmight be treated to some pickled herring or even a princess cake, a raspberry-filled dessert covered inmarzipan. Scandinavians cherish their public lands, and the trail systems are well taken care of. Hikers and backpackers can enjoy the stunning beauty in both late spring and summer, as well as a chance to see the midnight sun. Because of its far-north location, Swedish Lapland receives close to 24 hours of sunlight from June through early August. Between the boulder fields, mountains, and stunning glacial lakes, hiking here is a treat.

While hiking, you may spot reindeer herds or lemmings (a small rodent similar to a hamster) racing around rocks. The Sami people have herded reindeer for thousands of years through this very land. In the summer, keep an eye out for blueberries, lingonberries, and the brightly colored cloudberries. Because of the Arctic climate, weather conditions can change quickly from sunshine to rain and heavy fog, so it’s best to dress in layers and bring wind and rain protection if you plan to venture into the backcountry. The fantastic scenery of Swedish Lapland awaits you, no matter when you decide to take your trip. What are you waiting for?
