La presencia dominante y un cierto sentido de experiencia adquirida a lo largo de los años otorgan a las estructuras antiguas y descuidadas un peso particular difícil de describir, ciertamente mayor que las demostraciones grandilocuentes de ciertas arquitecturas contemporáneas. A su vez, es posible argumentar que el rescate y la reutilización de infraestructura vacante es quizá el método más sostenible al enfrentar el desarrollo urbano. Relacionarse con estructuras existentes no sólo implica trabajar con la materia física, también con la memoria social que soportan; permite evitar procesos indiscriminados de demolición con el consecuente deterioro del medio ambiente, reducir los costos asociados a demolición y reconstrucción y optimizar las inversiones, haciendo poco pero de manera inteligente. Sin duda, esta mentalidad nos permitiría como sociedad establecer nuevas y más ricas relaciones entre arquitectura, historia, memoria, economía y sostenibilidad.
The dominant presence and a certain sense of experience acquired over the years give old and neglected structures a particular weight that is difficult to describe, certainly greater than the grandiloquent demonstrations of certain examples of contemporary architecture. In turn, it is possible to argue that the recovery and reuse of vacant infrastructure is perhaps the most sustainable method when facing urban development. Relating to existing structures not only involves working with physical matter, but also with the social memory they support. It involves avoiding indiscriminate processes of demolition with the consequent deterioration of the environment, reducing the costs associated with demolition and reconstruction, and optimizing investments, doing little but in an intelligent way. Undoubtedly, this mentality would allow us as a society to establish new and richer relationships between architecture, history, memory, economy and sustainability.
