65TH ANNUAL AIA HONOLULU DESIGN AWARDS The American Institute of Architects, Honolulu Chapter (AIA Honolulu) honored this year’s best architectural projects during its 65th annual Design Awards. Held annually on O‘ahu since 1958, the gala event took place July 28 in the Sunset Ballroom at Aloha Tower Marketplace. This year’s Award of Excellence winners are: Island Studio, Honolulu Firm: Bohlin Cywinski Jackson Contractor: Armstrong Builders LLC ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i Campus, Hilo Firm: Brian Strawn, AIA and Karla Sierralta, AIA, University of Hawai‘i Community Design Center Client: University of Hawai‘i at Hilo Honorable mentions went to WRNS Studio and Nan Inc. for their work at Waikoloa Middle School for the Hawai‘i State Department of Education; Lowney Architecture, Looney & Associates, Interstore and Swinerton Builders for their work on Waikīkī Market for Food Pantry Ltd.; and Craig Steely Architecture and Hilo Coast Construction for their work at Pāpa‘aloa Homestead on behalf of clients Gary Beuschel and John Kruse. G70 and J. Kadowaki Inc. were presented with the Community Impact Award and Hawai‘i Energy Award for Energy-Efficient Design for Ho‘okupu Center in Honolulu on behalf of client Kupu Hawai‘i. Architects Brian Strawn and Karla Sierralta from the University of Hawai‘i Community Design Center were honored alongside Kūha'o Zane, Nalani Kanaka‘ole and Sig Zane for their work on behalf of the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. “Beyond Wayfinding: Prototypes” was presented with AIA Honolulu’s Distinctive Detail Award. The People’s Choice Award went to AHL, Chernoff Thompson Architects and Okland Construction
