En la parte alta de Coquimbo la topografía revela su pronunciada pendiente hacia el cerro El Vigía. Este sector cuenta sólo con sistemas de escaleras como conexión transversal, impidiendo a gran parte de los adultos mayores y discapacitados transitar con seguridad y fluidez hacia el centro histórico, que concentra el equipamiento básico de comercio y servicios. Se propone generar una conexión vertical y directa entre ambos sectores mediante ascensores urbanos (referencia: ascensor Polanco de Valparaíso) dispuestos en los ejes horizontales inconexos, rehabilitando un contexto socialmente vulnerable y descuidado. Reconociendo la tradición de los carpinteros del mar reflejada en el característico Barrio Inglés, Nexo Urbano pretende rescatar el oficio y la técnica de la construcción en madera amoldada a las técnicas constructivas actuales.
In the upper part of Coquimbo, the topography is characterized by a steep slope towards El Vigia hill. This area has only stairway systems as a transverse connection, preventing many aged and disabled adults from traveling safely and smoothly to the historical center, which concentrates the basic commercial and service facilities. The proposal generates a direct vertical connection between both sectors by means of urban elevators (as reference: the Polanco elevator of Valparaiso) arranged in unrelated horizontal axes, rehabilitating a socially vulnerable and neglected context. Recognizing the tradition of the carpenters of the sea reflected in the characteristic English Quarter, Nexo Urbano intends to rescue the craftmanship and techniques of wood construction adapted to current building technologies.
