INTERNATIONAL ANTARCTIC CENTER IN PUNTA ARENAS
El edificio, de 15.000 m², se levantará en extremo nororiente de la ciudad de Punta Arenas, a orillas del estrecho de Magallanes. Se estima que abriría sus puertas el 2022. The 15,000 sqm building will rise in the extreme northeast of the city of Punta Arenas, on the shores of the Magellan Strait. It is estimated to open its doors in 2022. Este concurso internacional convocado por el MOP llamó a diseñar un edificio icónico para Punta Arenas, que se convierta en un punto de atracción para la zona. La iniciativa, que forma parte del Plan Especial de Desarrollo para Zonas Extremas, será financiada por el Gobierno Regional de Magallanes y su gestión estará a cargo del Instituto Antártico Chileno y la Universidad de Magallanes, estimando que abriría sus puertas en cinco años. El objetivo del proyecto es generar infraestructura de primer orden que posibilite el desarrollo de ciencia antártica y que sea el soporte logístico indispensable para la realización de expediciones al continente, proyectando que pueda recibir a más de 500 científicos al año. Con una superficie de 15.000 m², el edificio se ubicará en un terreno de 2,3 ha en el sector de Punta Arenosa (extremo nororiente de Punta Arenas), conectado con el centro, el aeropuerto y los puertos. El CAI tendrá todo lo necesario para operar como un polo de referencia mundial en conocimiento, difusión y turismo de fines especiales. This international competition organized by the Ministry of Public Works called for the design of an iconic building for Punta Arenas, to become a city attraction. The initiative, part of the Special Development Plan for Extreme Areas, will be financed by the Regional Government of Magallanes and the Chilean Antarctic Institute. The University of Magallanes will oversee its management, estimating its opening in five years. The goal of the project is to generate first level infrastructure to support the development of Antarctic science and provide the indispensable logistical support for the accomplishment of expeditions to the continent. It is designed to receive more than 500 scientists per year. With an area of 15,000 sqm, the building will be located on a 2.3 ha site in the Punta Arenosa sector (north-eastern corner of Punta Arenas), connected to the downtown area, the airport and the seaport area. The IAC will have everything necessary to operate as a world reference center for knowledge, promotion and special interest tourism.
