La imagen arquitectónica de témpano se traduce en un gran volumen que acoge las tres áreas del proyecto (interactiva, investigativa, logística). Desde el acceso principal se comienza a vivir la experiencia antártica atravesando un puente sobre una plaza de agua donde emerge el edificio y sus múltiples recorridos. El acceso se define como una grieta que atraviesa parte del edificio permitiendo luz natural y guiando el recorrer hacia los puntos más jerárquicos del área interactiva, hasta rematar en el bosque milenario que tiene conexión directa con el borde costero puntarenense. Estructuralmente, el edificio se plantea como un contenedor o envolvente capaz de albergar múltiples recintos y programas de uso que puedan ir modificándose en el tiempo. A través de marcos de estructura metálica, se forman las costillas del volumen para ser revestido con paneles metálicos, vidrio o madera. La topografía con frente mar y las desfavorables condiciones del suelo propiciaron la estrategia de levantar el primer piso, generando otros tres niveles superiores y una superficie inferior para recintos de menor habitabilidad.
The architectural image of the iceberg is translated into a large volume that combines the three areas of the project (interactive, investigative, logistics). From the main entrance you start to feel the Antarctic experience by crossing a bridge over a water plaza from which the building and its multiple circulations emerge. The entrance is defined as a fissure that crosses part of the building allowing the entrance of natural light and guiding the flow towards the most hierarchical points of the interactive area. It ends in the ancient forest with a direct connection to the Punta Arenas coastal border. Structurally, the building is considered as a container or envelope capable of housing multiple enclosures and programs that can be modified over time. By means of structural metal frames, the ribs of the volume are coated with metal, glass or wooden panels. The topography, the seaside front and the unfavorable soil conditions favored the strategy of raising the first level, generating three additional higher levels and a lower area for rooms of less habitability.
