La arquitectura de pequeña escala, aquella construida a partir del mínimo de gestos, es la máxima preocupación profesional del arquitecto de la Universidad Andrés Bello. Desde su oficina creada el año 2011, junto a su equipo explora y define El Imaginario, un conjunto de conceptos donde la experimentación material espacial y la forma cumplen un objetivo clave. Small scale architecture, built with the minimum of gestures, is the fundamental professional concern of the architect from Universidad Andrés Bello. At his office created in 2011, he explores and defines with his team El Imaginario, a set of concepts where spatial, material and form experimentation play a key role.
Mejor alumno de la promoción 2009 de Arquitectura en la UNAB, Magíster en Arquitectura de la PUC y docente en distintos periodos tanto en su casa de estudios como en las universidades Mayor y Central, en su primera década como arquitecto Gonzalo Iturriaga (35) suma también interesantes distinciones. Especialmente por su obra más conocida, Refugio para un montañista, por la que fue nominado al premio Óscar Niemeyer para la Arquitectura Latinoamericana en la Bienal BAQ 2016 y que recibió el American Architecture Prize 2017 Small Architecture y el German Desing Awards 2019. Además, Plataforma Arquitectura seleccionó el edificio de oficinas Proingas entre los mejores proyectos del año 2016 y recientemente su estudio fue escogido por BUILD como la firma más innovadora en arquitectura residencial del país. Según explica, el ejercicio proyectual de Gonzalo Iturriaga Arquitectos se basa en establecer una mirada amplia y reflexiva en torno a las múltiples variables que cada encargo presenta: "Bajo esta mirada, cada proyecto se plantea como una investigación formal y espacial particular, sobre el programa, el lugar, el material y los requerimientos del cliente". Parte de este ejercicio es El Imaginario, exploración basada en "un conjunto de imágenes que divagan en la realidad, pero más que todo es una realidad ficticia inventada o imaginada por el arquitecto. Una forma de ver y entender las cosas que circundan constantemente en la mente de cada uno". Son estas imágenes –colectadas, trazadas, dibujadas, pintadas y quizás modeladas– las que en el proceso aspiran a abandonar el campo de lo imaginario "para hacerse parte de la realidad, un hecho en sí mismo". El año pasado Iturriaga fue invitado a Moscú a dictar una charla sobre este trabajo, en el marco del seminario de arquitectura organizado por MAK Architectural Club.
Best student of the 2009 architecture generation at Universidad Nacional Andrés Bello, Master of Architecture at Universidad Católica and professor at different periods both at his alma mater as well as at Universidad Mayor and Universidad Central, in his first decade as architect Gonzalo Iturriaga (35) has received noteworthy acknowledgements. Especially for his best-known work, Refuge for a Mountaineer, for which he was nominated for the Óscar Niemeyer Award for Latin American Architecture at the 2016 BAQ Biennial and which received the 2017 American Architecture Prize for Small Architecture and the 2019 German Design Award. In addition, Plataforma Arquitectura selected the Proingas office building among the best projects of 2016 and his studio was recently chosen by BUILD as the most innovative firm in residential architecture in the country. As explained by him, the design practice of Gonzalo Iturriaga Arquitectos is based on establishing a broad and thoughtful view of the multiple variables that each commission presents: "With this perspective, each project is considered as a specific formal and spatial search on the program, the place, the material and the requirements of the client". Part of this practice is El Imaginario, an exploration based on "a set of images that wander in reality, but more than anything, a fictitious reality invented or imagined by the architect. A way of seeing and understanding the things that constantly occupy the mind of everyone". It is these images –collected, traced, drawn, painted and sometimes modeled– that, in the process, aspire to leave the field of the imagination "to become part of reality, a fact in itself". Last year, Iturriaga was invited to Moscow to give a talk about his work, within the framework of an architecture seminar organized by MAK Architectural Club.
