What is radiofrequency? Radiofrequency (RF) devices use low energy radiation to heat the dermis. This heat stimulates the production of collagen to help improve signs of wrinkles and sagging skin. Research has found that RF devices are usually safe and can be effective at treating mild or moderate signs of aging.

When the handpiece is placed on the skin’s surface, an electromagnetic field of radio waves enters the skin and delivers energy, which is converted into heat in the skin.

What are the effects of radiofrequency? Radiofrequency creates heating within the skin, which in most cases is comfortable for the customer. Local blood circulation and metabolism increases, but the device also affects the connective tissue. RF waves heat the deep layer of the skin to between 122 and 167°F (50–75°C). Device heating temperatures cause the hydrogen bonds within the collagen molecule to break. However, the intermolecular bonds between the individual molecules remain intact and the triple helix unwinds. With a sufficient number of unwound helixes, the fibers are shortened causing collagen shrinking and tightened skin. Following the treatment, the tissue regenerates extensively, and the formation of new collagen can also be stimulated. The contraction of collagen (short-term effect) and the stimulation of collagen synthesis through the tissue repair process (long-term effect) have been observed in several studies. Therefore, the indications of radiofrequency treatment mainly include skin tightening and wrinkle reduction.
