CAMPUS COMMONS
THE LEARNING CURVE OF CARE THOUGHTS ON A DECADE OF DISCOVERY
A new year always inspires thoughts of past accomplishments and future goals, but this month is especially meaningful for me. Recently, I celebrated my 10th anniversary as a business owner. I had been a professional physical therapist for 16 years before I took over Campus Commons Physical Therapy from its previous owner. Becoming the owner was a full-circle moment for me, as I started my career here and spent eight years under this roof before moving on to other opportunities. Then, one day a decade ago, I was shocked to receive an email from the previous owner stating that he was retiring and curious if I had any interest in taking the reins. After many discussions with my wife, Tiffany, I decided to go for it. There was just one problem: I had never considered owning a business and had zero experience running this kind of operation. It was a big unknown and a new adventure — and more than a little scary. On the plus side, taking this step would allow me to treat patients the way I wanted in a familiar community. On the downside, Tiffany and I would still need to survive and pay our bills as this new venture (hopefully) took off. We did
our due diligence, wrote a business plan, and talked with accountants and banks to ensure we had the solid foundation to make it all work. Although there was a considerable learning curve in this process, I held on to the belief that I could expand the business’s reach and services. Above all, I wanted to be a part of something that positively impacted people’s quality of life. Looking back today, Tiffany and I are very proud of how this business has developed and grown. When I took over, we had six employees and saw 400–450 monthly visitors. Now, we have a staff of 20 and serve 1,200–1,300 patients monthly. Through it all, we’ve remained a mom-and-pop shop at heart, thrived on positive word of mouth, and made our business a good environment for employees and patients alike. Ten years later, we remain confident we made the right choice. Along the way, we’ve met the challenges of an industry that continues to evolve. In health care and insurance, few things stay the same for very long. No matter what, we’ve always successfully adapted to change without compromising our mission, values, or the care we provide
to everyone who calls on us to improve their physical well-being.
As we gear up for another year, I thank our patients for their belief and trust in us. We can’t always take away someone’s pain or get them back on the tennis court, but we can help them live more comfortably. After nearly 30 years of working with thousands of patients, my goal of helping people live happily and independently — especially in their later years — remains my biggest motivator. I’m also blessed to have one of the industry’s most dedicated and compassionate teams. They are the ones who’ve made the success we’ve enjoyed an ongoing reality. Sometimes, taking a chance in life makes all the difference. We’re grateful to have taken the chance with Campus Commons Physical Therapy, and we’re super excited to know the best is yet to come.
Happy New Year!

Is Egg Coffee the Perfect Morning Pick-Me-Up? EGG-CELLENT BREW
ARE THERE EGG-STRA PERKS? Fans of yolky java enjoy the flavor. The proteins in the egg reduce the acidity and bitterness of the coffee, while the brew method might enhance the amount of caffeine per cup. Eggs are an excellent source of protein, so starting the day with an egg coffee could give you an energy boost and keep you full longer, reducing food cravings. It does have extra calories, about 200 in a cup, so consider that before you drink up throughout the day.
Waking up may have just gotten more egg-citing! If you can’t start your day without coffee and breakfast, why not have them in the same tasty cup? Egg coffee is the latest food trend, whisking its way through social media. People have been adding egg whites, yolks, and even shells to their morning beverage since the 1800s, and this eggy cup of Joe is now gaining popularity and raising a few
eyebrows. Is egg coffee the perfect, protein- packed pick-me-up or a recipe for a stomach ache? Let’s get cracking! LET’S EGG-SPLORE THE TREND. Thanks to a barista sharing his favorite yolky brew recipe, egg coffee became popular on social media. He prepares the drink by cracking a whole egg into a small bowl of coffee grounds and water. Then, he boils the mix in a pan with more water before straining it into a mug. He said the resulting drink tastes like “black tea but without the astringency.”
THE YOLK’S ON YOU? Are the health benefits and flavor really all they’re cracked up to be? There’s no question that eggs are an excellent protein source, but raw or undercooked eggs pose potential health risks. Raw eggs can contain bacteria like salmonella or E. coli, and eggshells could damage your digestive system — don’t let them free-range around your innards. To ensure your eggs are fully cooked, the temperature of the coffee needs to reach 160 degrees F. To play it safe, opt for pasteurized liquid eggs instead of cracking raw eggs directly into your mug.
Energizing Eats POWER-PACKED PLATES FOR PEAK PERFORMANCE Although physical therapy and other forms of exercise do wonders for our bodies, they may leave us feeling more depleted than necessary if our diets aren’t aligned with our goals. Here are a few items to add to your food shopping list to help you feel at your peak while stretching your way to better health. THE PROTEIN PRINCIPLE Protein helps our body build muscle mass and repair strained tissue. Tofu, fish, chicken, and other forms of lean protein are excellent fuel sources for these functions. Additionally, they help us maintain a healthy body weight by making us feel fuller faster. Eggs are another excellent source of protein, providing healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals for a solid start to your morning. If dietary restrictions or personal beliefs prevent you from consuming animal-derived protein, consult your physician for alternative ways to get what you need to power your workouts, physical therapy sessions, and other activities throughout the day. FRESH FRUITS FOR FUN-FILLED LIVING A sweet tooth can be a liability for anyone looking to improve their physical well-being. Nature’s candy is always the healthiest option when satisfying your sugar cravings. Many fruits contain antioxidants, which help slow
inflammation, and vitamin C, which helps joints stay lubricated through collagen production. The next time you want to dive into a candy bar, grab some blueberries or kiwis instead. DECADENCE DONE RIGHT If your desire to indulge in decadent food outweighs the options in the fruit aisle, snacking on some dark chocolate is your safest bet for benefiting your body while bending the rules. Loaded with healthy fats, fiber, and antioxidants, dark chocolate can add nutrition to your naughtiness after a PT session. Of course, moderation is always crucial, as you don’t want to undo an hour’s worth of health-conscious activity with a few minutes of folly.

A MISSION MADE POSSIBLE
TOM CRUISE’S PT TRIUMPH
Tom Cruise may be one of the world’s most famous and celebrated actors, but that doesn’t mean his bones and joints are immune to breaking.
in a 2018 interview with People magazine. “Six weeks later, I had to be on set; 12 weeks later, I had to be sprinting again. Doctors said they weren’t sure whether I’d be sprinting in nine months, let alone that time. I was like, ‘Okay, I gotta figure this out, and I gotta figure it out fast.’” By seeking physical therapy as an option, Cruise made a miraculous recovery, returning to the set in time to complete his scenes. “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” was released right on time in July 2018, eventually earning nearly $800 million worldwide. Cruise’s ankle, in the meantime, fully recovered from the missed-rooftop ordeal.
THE CRACK HEARD ROUND HOLLYWOOD In 2018, the then-55-year-old actor — known for performing his own stunts in “Mission: Impossible” movies like “Ghost Protocol” and “Rogue Nation” — was in London filming “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” when an on-set accident threatened to derail the film’s completion and put his future as an action star in jeopardy. While jumping
from one rooftop to another as the cameras rolled, Cruise descended too early and hit the side of the second building, breaking his ankle upon impact. Production was promptly halted, and physicians feared he would never run again.
SUCCESS IN SACRAMENTO Although we would never suggest jumping from one building to the next, we do recommend contacting us if physical therapy could help you recover from a severe injury. Our trained staff will work with you to develop a tailored plan to support your recovery and help prevent future discomfort. As Tom Cruise’s determination showed the world, no mission related to your physical health is impossible.
THE 6-WEEK PT SOLUTION Given only six weeks to heal before production on the film resumed, Cruise immediately sought treatment through professional physical therapy.
“I went right into rehab — about 10 hours a day, 12 hours, seven days a week,” he recalled

Your Go-To Guide for Healthy Sweeteners

Do you crave sweets but want to dodge the sugar crash? There’s no need to sour on the idea of having tasty treats just because you’re avoiding regular and refined sugars. You can easily find various healthy sugar substitutes that taste delicious and cut calories and health risks associated with the regular sweet stuff. Here are some to look for. STEVIA Stevia is an all-natural sweetener made from leaves. It’s about 200–400 times sweeter than regular sugar and has no carbohydrates, calories, or artificial ingredients. This tasty option is widely available in powder or liquid form, but be sure to read labels. (The brand Truvia adds erythritol, another sugar-free sweetener, and Stevia In The Raw adds maltodextrin, a carbohydrate.) Though stevia can taste metallic for some people, it’s a wonderful way to sweeten drinks or food without causing insulin spikes. Along with being a good option for people with diabetes, it helps manage healthy weight for those on keto or low-calorie diets. ALLULOSE Allulose is a rare natural sugar found in fruits like dates and mulberries. It has 90% fewer calories than regular sugar, making it an almost entirely guilt-free option for those trying to lose weight. This option also doesn’t negatively impact blood sugar or insulin levels, but studies are still needed
to determine other potential side effects. It has a similar taste and texture to standard sugar, making it an easy swap.
MONK FRUIT SUGAR This liquid sweetener comes from
the monk fruit, a small melon-like fruit named for the Buddhist monks who cultivated it in ancient times. The fruit is naturally about 100–250 times sweeter than the sugar we buy at the store. Monk fruit sugar is
a zero-calorie, anti-inflammatory option for coffee, smoothies, and other recipes. But, again, read labels. A popular brand of monk fruit sweetener, Lakanto, contains erythritol, and Monk Fruit In The Raw uses maltodextrin. With healthy alternatives like stevia, allulose, and monk fruit sugar, you don’t have to deny your sweet tooth! These natural options are packed with flavor without calories and health risks. Whether you’re managing your weight, watching your blood sugar, or trying to make smarter choices, you can treat yourself with these sweet choices. After all, life is too short to skip dessert, especially one made with an all-natural sugar substitute!
