Charles T. Gooden, Jr. 1932-2024 Past Grand Lt. Strategus, Educator, Education Administraton
T he St. Louis (MO) Lt. Strategus Charles T. Gooden (Alpha Sigma 1952), who entered the Chapter Invisible on Octo- ber 8, 2024. Gooden led the St. Louis (MO) Alumni as polemarch [1964-1968]. Alumni mourns the passing of past Grand During this period, Gooden was also the Conclave Chair- man for the 54th Grand Chapter Meeting held in St. Louis, MO in August 1967. In 1952 at the 42nd Grand Chapter Meeting, the Grand Chapter elected Gooden as Grand Lt. Stategus, serving in the 15th Administration led by Grand Polemarch Dr. W. Henry Greene. He grew up in Waukegan, IL and was educated in the Chicago Public Schools. He obtained his B.S. degree in physical education, and recreation science from Southern University A &M College (now Univer- sity), Baton Rouge, LA, and master’s degree in elementary, health physical education, recreation from the University of Illinois,

served for more than twenty years with Harris Stowe State University. A Life Member of Kappa Alpha Psi, Gooden also held memberships with the St. Louis Couples’ Club, Bridges, and the St. Louis Anniversary Club. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the General Protestant Children’s Home, Creve Coeur, MO, the Board of Governors of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, the Board of Directors of the St. Louis Children’s Choir and the Board of Directors, Classic 107.3 The Voice of the Arts In St. Louis. Gooden served his com- munity through service as a City Councilman and com- missioner for the Planning and Zoning Committee of the City of Olivette. Brother Charles T. Gooden, Jr. is predeceased
Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, Illinois, master’s degree in Educational Administration from Washington University, St. Louis, MO and PhD in education from Oberlin College, Oberlin, OH. Gooden worked as a teacher in Princeton, LA, Chicago, IL, and public schools for ten years and then served in the St. Louis Public School System for more than thirty (30) years as classroom teacher; athletic coach, principal, and admin- istrator. He later worked as a grant writer/trainer, educa- tional consultant with the St. Louis County Government. After retiring from the St. Louis Public School System, Gooden held roles of instruc- tor/coordinator, Interim Athletic Director, reviewer for Charter school proposals,
NCATE, DESE, Dean of Stu- dents, Executive Assistant to the President of Harris Stowe State University. While at Harris Stowe State University, Gooden served as Chairman of the Dr. Ben Carson Fund, St. Louis Chapter, Chairman of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. State Commission State- wide Celebration, HSSU Professional Level Interview Committee, HSSU Teacher Education Multicultural Assessment Committee, HSSU Education Depart-
