L ongtime Central State (OH) University professor and Holocast survivor Aleksandar Svager (Wilberforce (OH) Alumni 1972) entered the Chapter Invisible at aged 93, on Tuesday, October 2, 2024. Svager was born in Sara- jevo, Yugoslavia on August 10, 1931. In 1941, Svager and his parents escaped from Nazi-occupied Yugoslavia, only hours before they were to be transported to Auschwitz, but were instead placed in a pris- oner of war camp in Italy. When World War II was over, the Svager family returned to Yugoslavia, where he completed high school-level studies. Thereafter, he attended the Nuclear Institute of Zagreb, where he com- pleted undergraduate courses and remained for postgraduate studies. After two years at the Nuclear Institute, the University of Sarajevo awarded him a graduate teaching fellowship, which
allowed him to teach while completing his postgradu- ate program. Living in Communist-run Yugoslavia was challeng- ing for young Svager as he found the Yugoslavian government control bur- densome. In Svager’s view, the Yugoslav government was determined to keep its top scientists and tech- nologists from leaving the country. As a result, Svager applied for and received a student visa through the Institute for International Education, which allowed him to study in a foreign university. Thus in 1960, Aleksandar became a teaching assistant in the Texas Christian University physics department, where he received one more degree, a Master of Arts. He continued to refuse his country’s demands for his return and thus chose to seek a faculty position in the US. Svager chose Central State University (CSU) since it offered him the greatest autonomy and allowed him to select his
