spectacular rustic setting there was time for exercise and relaxa tion. But of even greater benefit there was the challenge and in spiration of the “workshops” in Christian Education and Mis sions, led by capable and experi enced men who knew what they were talking about. I had always been active in the ministerial as sociation wherever I pastored, but here was a real opportunity to become better acquainted with fellow-ministers of various de nominations as we prayed, wor shipped, ate and had fellowship together. Here was a fellowship that en larged my vision, warmed my heart and fired my soul. The five- day conference, designed as a program of continuing education for the pastor, majors in vital areas that time does not allow us to pursue in our regular Bible college and seminary training. The latest methods and tech niques in presenting the change less message were shared with us. We were made conscious o f the greatness of our message, the im portance of our methods and the grandeur o f the mission that is ours to accomplish. No, I didn’t leave the ministry. I received a much-needed “ spirit ual shot-in-the-arm” at the Hume Lake Pastors’ Conference and I came back down the mountain with a greater vision than ever before. Had it not been for that con ference sponsored by Scripture Press, Hume Lake Conference Grounds, Sudan Interior Mission and other missionary agencies, I might not be in the ministry to day. How I thank God for the men of vision in these Christian institutions who recognize the value of investing in the lives of pastors by giving them a free week at such a beautiful retreat! To them I owe an eternal debt of gratitude for the opportunity of gaining a new perspective. Be cause of the challenge and in spiration received at the 1962 Pastors’ Conference, I have not missed one since. he

HOSTAGE IN DJAKARTA by

HAROLD LOVESTRAND

\ A pawn in the current Indonesian chess game—this is Harold Lovestrand’s experience. It is the record of a mis sionary caught in the turmoil of today’s chaotic world— a living chronicle of gospel witness—of endless days in solitary confinement—of a mind and body driven to the very limits of mental and physical endurance. Today—tomorrow—Indonesia occupies the headlines—and Harold Lovestrand was there! He was there when the Communists attempted to take over the island empire. He was there during the slaughter that followed. Read about Indonesia as it really is. Share in the intrigue and political drama unfolding even now in the Far East. Thrill to the inspirational impact of victory won through an enduring Christian faith.
